What's this about gravy-from-a-jar? blink.gif

Maybe it's just my homemaker upbringing, but I've never heard of it until my father-in-law mentioned it for our Thanksgiving feast. I couldn't help but make such a disgusted face that he was like, "...uh, I guess you don't like that idea." I told him I'd make it from the pan drippings myself and save him the few dollars of buying it at the supermarket! laughing.gif

I don't remember seeing it at the supermarkets back in Vancouver - I'm just wondering if it's something I have to get used to here. Not eating, mind you, just finding it at Whole Foods. laughing.gif

I have heard of it, don't recall every seeing it. I do know, however, they sell gravy mix in a powder form that you mix with water and boil to thicken. I have used the powder version before and it wasn't bad.
MissStacey
I have used the powder stuff- it is pretty good.

I have never seen gravy in a jar though.

Come to think of it- I have bought canned poutine sauce.

I thought poutine sauce was gravy... helpsmilie.gif

We don't have gravy very often, but when we do I always use gravy from a can - I really like the flavour and it only has 25 calories in a 1/4 of a cup smile.gif

The Franco American (think it is sold under the Campbell's brand in the U.S.) is available at all the supermarkets here.

I miss poutine. sad.gif I can't find white cheddar curds here. I could probably make it with mozza, but it's not the same.

I've seen it!!! Can't remember for the life of me what brand it was, but my husband bought it once and we had it with biscuits.
I hate to say it, but it was pretty good ohmy.gif
I'm still a stickler for tradition though, so if given the choice, I would also make the gravy myself from the pan drippings.

I've had gravy from a packet too and that isn't bad at all. My heart will always be with the homemade pan dripping gravy though.

I remember seeing cheese curds at TJs the other day. I turned to Bee - "Honey, we can make poutine at home now!!" laughing.gif
jundp
blech!!! homemade only please smile.gif

Haven't heard of gravy-in-a-jar. I've seen the canned stuff, though. The ingredients list had msg on it so it went right back on the shelf. Nothing like a good home-made gravy.... sans msg.

I've seen or heard of gravy-in-a-can in Canada; and of course the packaged gravy, but I NEVER bought it or used it. Disgusting! Since moving to the US, there are about 10 varities in a jar, can, and of course the packaged kinds. Gene asked me to pick up some one day for meatloaf I was making, and I made this face...well, safe to say he didn't mention it again. I make all my gravy from scratch. I find most "convenience" foods here horribly tasteless and nothing like the real thing. I've also never seen more convenience foods in my life. UGH!

Some states have the cheese curds, but I found a good alternative here in Illinois, Muenster cheese. I bought a big block at Sam's anf I cut it myself in cubes. It melts just like the cheese curds and taste very good. The only thing missing is the "squeek squeek" good.gif

I worked in a grocery store, we never had gravy in a jar, just what you call "Gravy Granules" etc. etc.
Oxo, Bistro, etc. Not bad if you need gravy in a pinch... I guess...I don't eat gravy really, I think it's yucky. unsure.gif
I imagine gravy in a jar would taste like this....

Well, my Mom always made homemade gravy, so it is what we were accustomed to, however it never occurs to me to make gravy now. I would say that homemade gravy gets a 84% on the taste scale while canned gravy probably comes in at around 75%.

That's my scientific analysis of the gravy choices tongue_ss.gif
charles!
c'mon now, even *i* can make gravy (with the powder mix tongue.gif )

You gravy expert you! tongue.gif

Check the labels on the canned or jarred gravy, they're probably full of sodium, MSG and high fructose corn syrup tongue.gif

My hubby doesn't like gravy (I've seen how his mother used to make it, I don't blame him! wink.gif ) so I don't bother with it most of the time. But Watkins has a nice soup & gravy mix that I use if I feel like chips n gravy or something for me.

last year we had bought a bunch of those gravy packets over for Thanksgiving but hubby's mom had bought this gravy in a big a$$ can and I was thinking to myself... "ewww, that is going to be gross" but it actually was quite good better then the packet gravy in fact.... good.gif

hubby's dad doesn't quite remember where they bought it from though... so I guess it probably will be packets this year...

growing up we always had homemade gravy and of course that is the best by far good.gif
