They call it "black friday"

Is this like our boxing day?

Yes it is.

Folks there might think we're nuts when we go out shopping on the 26th... laughing.gif

I go shopping every December 26th. You cannot beat the after-Christmas bargains.
Sprailenes
I know about December 26th...HELLO who can turn down 10 rolls of 50 ft gift wrap at 75% off!!? Not I, my friends!

Anyways my son got a gift card from his grandparents for the Gap, and I figure I am going to take him then and hopefully take advantage of the sales.

I have actually just asked my husband if we can just go sit on a bench at the mall and watch this "chaos" every one speaks of. blink.gif

I shop online...............SO MUCH EASIER!!
Sprailenes
Online shopping....I don't trust it when it comes to clothes though...my body is all wonky and weird...like I look like I'm wearing an inner tube around my hips...I got breeding hips...they're huge. So I need to try on clothes.

I think thats too much information.

pretty much - people get into fights while shopping tongue.gif

I never venture out to go shopping on that day. I tried shopping at Yorkdale in Toronto on Boxing Day once too... I'll never do that again either. whistling.gif

I stay away!! lol I dont buy clothes online unless I have purchased them before. I usually check out Ebay! I bought 1 pair of shorts at a local sporting store for $50. Got TWO pairs (including shipping) on Ebay of the exact shorts for less than $30! Wife buys shoes from Zappos all the time! Shipping is free and same is the returns!

I didn't have a clue what Black Friday meant at all, or why it's called Black Friday. I don't think I have what it takes to venture into the fray, though. (The name, alone, makes me think of death. blink.gif ) I went to the Boxing Day sales at Square One once. Actually, I spent 2 hours trapped in a line of cars trying to get to Square One, then another 2 hours trying to get away from Square One. We never did go inside the mall. Too hard on the nerves.

Carlawarla
Black Friday...yes, the equivalent of Boxing Day. Another way to look at it is, Black Friday is buying for others, while Boxing Day is buying for oneself! tongue_ss.gif

My kids love Boxing Day, they usually get money from their grandparents, and myself, and they pool it together, and line up real early and get some great deals. I think it's only for the young though! They seem to love it. I'm sure they won't though in 20 years. yes.gif

supposedly black friday means the businesses start operating in the black.

Oh but it's even worse....

Some stores will open at 5am!!!!!!! to start their business. Last year I made fun of my husband cause he went shopping with his mom at 5am for christmas gifts (I was still in Canada) but yesterday we got the dreaded phone call....she ask him if I would go shopping with her!!!!! Thing is we go to Michigan and spend 3 days in their house so it's kinda hard to get away from that....But I hate shopping and I am stiill not working so no money for me to spend this year. Plus waking up at 4am and being stuck in the stores for hours....HELL NO!!!!

I heard a radio commercial this morning....Kohl's here is opening at 4 a.m. on Friday.

Oh, yeah.......now, I hear K-Mart is open on Thanksgiving.

Nothing is sacred anymore.

Yeah, that is what they say it means. I personally think that is BS. I've seen our store reports!

Not sure about boxing day as I thought most people went back to work the day after. But Black Friday pretty much a lot of people have the day off so it's millions upon millions of people going out to start their Christmas shopping. Though I did hear it was an urban myth that it's the bussiest day. I think that's actually in Dec sometime.

So yeah from what I remember of the day after christmas shopping, that is Canada's equlivent to Black Friday...
Reba
I mistakenly went out on Black Friday once. Never again. Nope, not ever. Its a freakin' zoo and the people are animals throwing stuff all over the place. And no way would I get up before dawn just to catch a bargain. What a stupid day. Far worse than Boxing Day in Toronto IMO.

Sprailenes
For some reason I just keep picturing: running of the bulls.

Except maybe it's...running of the soccer moms.
*Marilyn*
Boxing Day is usually a holiday too in Canada.... I went shopping once on boxing day.. that was not fun no0pb.gif
warlord
Don't be surprised to actually see people camped out at some stores over night if there's something really big people are wanting to get this year.

Oh this shows the other busy days to shop, though it's $'s spent, I don't think they have as much as a rush as this Friday will. I never go out so I'll be at home as usual avoiding the cold weather we're now getting like the plague...

All of the flyers should be out in Thursdays paper so you can plan your strategies!!...LOL... I cannot wait to get back to the US and be able to shop on Thanksgiving (usually Kmart has a huge flyer just for that day) and the day after!!... If the store opens at 5 am..plan to be there at 3 (yes some people will line up the night before and sleep in sleeping bags)..go with a team so that if you do sit in line with blankets and chairs you have someone that can run them to the car before the store opens so you dont lose your place!... I get so excited thinking about it!!...LOL

Thanksgiving Day at Kmart is usually a crazy day..I was a manager at Kmart before I moved to Canada 6 years ago (and before it was bought by Sears) and only associates that volunteered were scheduled for that day (and they only worked the hours that they said they could work)...You would not believe the people that would call to say how disgusted they were that we were open on Thanksgiving and how sad it was that employees werent with their families...funny how these people could take time away from their families just to call and harass us..LOL

Have fun!!

HA!! Now that explains it! I dragged my husband into Sears here a few times, but could never understand why it was so different than Sears Canada. I even said to him "This is so weird. American Sears look just like K-Mart." Seriously! I actually said that! laughing.gif

So Hannah.... how'd you make out working cash at 2:30 in the morning? ohmy.gif
