Full Version: Exporting our dog to america

Dan and Lynne
hi,
i have been sending off requests for quotes to export my poopie over the past week and today i got an 'estimate' back...which has made me question this as one i recieved previouly told me my poopie had everything she needed except her rabies injection...this company i heard from today requests different! HELP! prior to recieving this estimate i contacted airborne pets in USA to ask what they knew and there was no mention of further injections needed...
bear with me...lol...
now, last month, i took her to the vets and asked the vet to give her everything she needed so she can be crated up on the day and boarded on the plane all ready for her flight to her new home, the vet was a little unsure if there was any new regulations as to exporting dogs to america so she called DEFRA...(LMAO) who after her describing the dog and the situation was asked 'and what kind of snake is that' now, i know my dog is a slippery pooch...but she definatly has fur! she said to the woman on the phone ' you so obviously cant help me any further' and hung up laughing!!
my poopie has had her 'annual injections' and is microchipped and had rabies injection in october...she doesnt (apparently) require a pet passport as she, like me, will not be returning to the UK!
i requested glasgow airport as this is where i will be flying from (the company did inform me that i would save £250 if i flew her from edinburgh so she could stop off in germany for a short visit...nope...i want her on the same flight as i am on and i certainly dont want to divert to germany!)
i have attached the 'estimate' i recieved today. the highlighted red are what my poopie currently has been injected for, does anyone else know if the rest is actually needed, the vet seems to think that the rest is only for entering australia.

has anyone here sucessfully exported their pooch to america without all these 'unneeded' injections? can anyone here advise me on exporting my poochie please?

Contact the airline carrier for advice for allowing animals on board. I have read several members on here that have travelled with their pets.

try this site for info...but I am pretty sure most DO allow pets to travel, whether in the cabin or cargo hold.

And..I don't think they paid that much for a pet but I don't remember.

Good luck.

I brought my labrador with us....she just needed a rabies shot and a 48 fit to fly check from a vet...plus the appropriate carrier...she did great, arrived in really good health and VERY happy!!!!!

Three words of advice from an owner of a very-well travelled pet:

Get. The. Passport.

You never know where your future plans are going to take you. You never know what is going to happen. Very few vets in the US are familiar with the DEFRA requirements and it is NOT something you want to risk if you have to go back.

I know you're going through the visa process; I know right now you're saying "I'm not going to go back." So did we. We had to leave our pets behind when circumstances dictated that we go back. Don't make the same mistake - lay out the extra time and expense now!

Wow, that seems pretty expensive...Sarah will fly Continental from Birmingham to Newark to Dallas, and I don't recall it being near that much when we talked with them, and she's bringing TWO Labs. Enyone else chime in on rates?

Here's Continental's pet travel info for those flying Continental: http://www.continental.com/web/en-US/conte...mals/rates.aspx

DO NOT USE THE PET CARRIERS!! If you fly with Delta or NWest you can take your dog as accompanied baggage for $100. You still need the formal vet certificate, vaccinations and an approved transport kennel but trust me it is no hassle at all. I received loads of quotes for my lab and I fail to see how the carriers can justify 1200 pounds for something that I managed all in for approx 250 inc the extras. The websites for those two airlines have good information on travelling with your pet, you do however need to book your flight direct with the airline.

Do not worry too much about getting your dog in to the USA, it is far easier for them than us suspicious humans I can assure you.

Dont worry about the non standard vaccinations until you get over here. Heartworm testing is needed when you get here as it is a nasty mosquito carried problem.

Bess is now enjoying her retirement here in Florida and is a million times better off for being here too.

Good luck in whatever you decide to do. good.gif

Hi Selly

Your post is very encouraging yes.gif ! We have a lab and a cat to move, although not until Feb so we still have some time.

We'll be travelling with AA most likely and I will contact them, but can you tell me where you got the 'approved transport kennel'? Also, did anyone - vet or airline?- give you advice as to how to ensure the lab was happy/ healthy on board the flight?

Thank you!
Dan and Lynne
hi, thanks selly...
i have been looking into this alot since i got that quote above, i feel that pet export companies are only here to rip us off.
for anyone else who is looking at transporting a pet to america (and beyond!) ive added what i have found out.

what the pet requires:
http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/dq/animal.htm#dogs

the KENNEL or CRATE:
has to be to IATA (International Air Transport Association) standard, contacting pet exporters to purchase one of theirs is not a good idea...they add on about £60 - £80 plus a delivery cost. some export companies build their own to your pets measurements...personally i would go for the *google* VARI KENNEL type of carrier, at least you would be getting your monies worth! (for them to build a kennel would cost nearly as much as the varikennel) make sure your pet measurements are accurate as the airline is strict on the pet comfort issue, you can find out here

Kennel info

the two airlines which selly mentioned...info here...
NWA
Delta
(so far ive found that continental, british airways and virgin only use export companies)
hope this helps anyone good.gif

She was so cute...got her cheap too cos the breeder was interested mostly in show dogs, and of course long hair is considered a 'fault'.
Dan and Lynne
yup, shouldnt be classed as a fault...they are bootiful poopies!
im sure i will be looking for one when i (eventually) get over there!!

do we have a piccy of her?
Welshcookie
I don't have any on my computer at the moment because my scanner is on the blink sad.gif
Dan and Lynne
after two hours of being tossed across the american telephone network i am told that since sept 11 no airline will carry pets without going via a pet export company (this was from Delta (KLM)

pretty much sucks if your looking to save a few bucks on transporting your pet!

(im not sure about carry on pets...but this is defiantly for pets in cargo)

Not specific to the UK blush.gif , but...
I brought my siberian husky Anya with AA as checked bagagge, it costed $100 and she made it here safe and sound. I bought her carrier at a pet store, along with an automatic waterer designed for pet carriers (they look like those hamsters waterers, only bigger good.gif ). I was considering buying pet carrier absorbant liners in case of "accidents", but our vet advised against it, because it has plastic on it, and said to use a generous amount of newspapers instead. I also put her blanket and food bowl in the cage so she could have some familiar smells. Bring dog treats to the airport so you can feed them to your dog during check in if it gets nervous.
Because there is a limit to the number of dogs on the plane, we tried to be one of the first for check in, that is 4 hours before the flight. Another thing to consider is the weather restrictions on pet travel.
Here's the link for AA AA traveling with pets

Good luck!

im sorry about my venting, it has just become so frustrating, especially after the calls i made today, i have just been talking to my OH and he reminded me that on his visits his case was packed up with electronics...wires...etc...and no one batted an eye...yet when we want to transport our dog we get told that we cant because some companies want to make money out of what happened on 11 sept!! what we gonna do...plant a bomb up her whistling.gif ! i am so annoyed, all the quotes i have been getting are for silly money...when i already know how much it cost to DIY (if i could crying.gif ) they are making such a profit out of this!!

with this and the whole visa and waiting process...i sooo dont want to get rid of my dog...im not that kind of owner...but this is killing me. i wish the sea would just dry up and ill walk her across!!

thanks for the link smile.gif ...ill try yet another airline, maybe this one will accept that some people just dont have oodles of money!

Dan and Lynne
yeay for american airlines!!

Got good news? smile.gif

promising news!

so long as the temperature is right on the day of the flight as i am looking (hoping for) a january flight, she needs a letter from her vets saying she can travel in temperatures to -8 deg, should the temperature be that on arrival at JFK (they will accept her anyway up to 8 deg) along with the fit to fly letter.

she has to be comfortable in the veri kennel 500 size. which i think is the kennel i was getting next week.

my quotes were pleasing too! $110 to go as excess baggage or £790 to fly on her own. there is a customs clearance of approx $50 at JFK

the only thing is she or we would have to fly from heathrow to JFK which im at the other side of england and my OH is in NJ, edinburgh to newark wouldve been nicer...but i am soooo pleased i have got this sorted...THANK YOU SO MUCH!! good.gif

MY POOPIES GONNA BE AN AMERICAN AKITA!! kicking.gif

Happy they were able to help! have a safe trip with your doggies!! good.gif

When you arrive at the airport with your pet (dog in my case), they will take the carrier minus pet and put it through security checks. They will then apply all of the various labels etc to the exterior of the kennel/ carrier. Once everything is done they let you put the pet in to the kennel/ carrier and they seal it for you. The pet is then taken to the pet holding area without you and you then continue through the normal passenger route. I found that the ground crew were very thorough and reassuring which is well needed. The kennel/ carrier is issued with its own boarding sticker, which is transfered to the flight crew and then given to you when the pet is loaded on to the aircraft. I was told that they save the loading of pets until the very last minute to minimise the stress that they go through. Once at the other end, you must go to oversize luggage arrivals in the baggage reclaim area. Unfortunately they might not let you get the pet out of its kennel/ carrier until you have cleared imigration etc. Once you get to the other side you pet will appear somewhat traumatised, but they do settle back down again once you reassure them and get them out of their kennel/ carrier. My dog was back to being her usual self within minutes.

From the vets perspective, I visited the vet the day before we travelled for the fit to travel certificate. You need to check that they have the up to date animal export paperwork as issued by the appropriate government department, do this well in advance of your appointment to give them time to get it if they haven't. Also check the requirements for thestate in which you are ultimately travelling to. The vet themselves just needs to certify the health of the animal and confirm that the mandatory vaccinations have been administered or are up to date. Remember that the rabies shot will need to be given at least 30 days prior to travel. Also ensure that the vet writes the micro chip number of your pet on the letter.

I also got one of the low cost kennels, as long as it fullfills the requirements of the AITA and the airline, there is no need to spend a fortune. Bottom line here is treat the move of your pet very much like you did your visa application. Do the research, spend some time weighing up the options and then come up with a plan that fits in with your own schedule. Please believe me when I say that it is less hassle than it first appears and once you get to the other side, you will wonder why you worried so much about it.

Good luck to all and dont worry about the process.
