Hey Steven your Mom's meal sounds good! After many many years of preparing Thanksgiving dinner in Canada (the second Monday in October), I'm looking forward to
having someone else do it this year! My in-laws have Thanksgiving in their home, and my MIL is a fabulous cook! I've been for one Thanksgiving meal with them before I moved down here, so I know it's good. I really don't like the green bean casserole. I know it's a tradition here though! Matter of fact, my MIL referred to it as the "required GB casserole". I know that not many people even had a taste of it the time I was here before. haha What a waste.

My in-laws also have a brown sugar or syrup glazed carrots instead of the peas. Ambrosia salad...MMMMMMMMMM a favourite of mine...especially for dessert!

Where are you having Thanksgiving dinner?

I just read what I'd wrote, and realized first of all it was in the Philipines thread..........

and second it was for those that hadn't eaten turkey before!

Steven,

I've never eaten the "BIRD" other than ground turkey we buy every now and then (that doesn't count right?). My mother-in-law will be the one doing all the cooking. We are from the south so my mother in law cooks the best home style food I know especially beans (I hate it back home), biscuits and cornbread love them now. Anyway, everyone in the family say she cooks the best roasted turkey so I'm excited about that.

Oh her pecan pie and strawberry cake are both to die for yum yum yum

Would you be kind enough to adopt us over the Thanksgiving? luv.gif I promise, I won't eat much. Hehehe... biggrin.gif Boy, what a feast for you guys!

I had turkey before. That's our main dish (along with glazed ham with slices of pineapple) during our wedding reception. It was my first time to have it with cranberry sauce and baked beans topped with fried onion. This Thanksgiving, David and I will be going up to Nebraska and spend a week there with my in-laws. They're all the best cooks I've known so far so I'm not sure yet who will cook the bird. We will be buying it though...

HAPPY THANKSGIVING ALL!

My mouth is watering at all that food.

It will be my first Thanksgiving here in the Southern US. In Canada, my mom always did:

Roast turkey stuffed with white bread stuffing, gravy, mashed potatoes, whipped turnips and carrots, canned peas, canned cranberry sauce, dinner buns.

I'm excited for Mel's menu. We are having a lot of people over so we are doing both a deep fried turkey and a turduckin. A turduckin is a turkey, duck and a chicken. All the bones are removed and they are stuffed inside each other with a layer of stuffing between each. I have never tried either a deep fried turkey or a turduckin. He is doing oyster dressing- never tried that either. He is also doing some special sweet potato recipe that his grandmother always made. Homemade cranberry sauce, mashed potatoes, gravy, and whatever else we feel like doing.

first we are going to the Macys Thanksgiving Parade(surprize for my hubby) then we are going to go home to my folks house

Roast Turkey made SpanishCaribbean style(hard to explain, using spanish spices ......etc)

rice

Yummmm!!

First Thanksgiving dinner that I prepared we had:

Roasted Turkey
Stuffing
Sweet Potato Casserole (with mini-marshmallows on top)
Green beans (with dried onions on top)
Cranberry Sauce
Gravy
Mashed Potatoes
Seafood bisque
Cornbread

For dessert we had:

Pumpkin Pie
Pecan Pie

The turkey came out pretty good considering it was my first attempt.

This year it's just going to be hubby, myself and my son. Not sure yet if my stepson will be joining us. So, we just got a small turkey and maybe just have a small dinner for us.

smile.gif We were going to visit my family in Arizona, but Jinky started working at Macy's so we're going to have a small gathering of ourselves. Jinky keeps saying we should skip the turkey and have chicken...LOL. I'll be doing most of the cooking, so I just hope the turkey comes out tender and juicy for her first turkey. star_smile.gif

LOL...same here for Jinky. We buy the ground turkey as a healthier alternative to beef or pork, but she's never tasted the 'BIRD' in its natural form. tongue.gif

I love pecan pie .....we're gonna get ours from Costco...but hats off to my mom for all the years that she made most of everything from scratch. good.gif

LOL...I wondered what the hell a turduckin was. Sounds all good though. Enjoy your first Thanksgiving here, Stacy! Let me know how that turduckin tastes.

Amby
Your thanksgiving meals all sound fabulous! Last year I made my first ever Thanksgiving and we were in England.

I made:

Turkey
Ham
Chicken & Dumplings
Green Bean Casserole
Herbed Stuffing
Buttered Corn
Glazed Carrots
Mash Potato
Collard Greens
Pumpkin Pie
Pecan Pie Apple Pie
Oatmeal Cranberry & White Chocolate Cookies
Also appetizers: cheese platter, pigs in a blanket & spicy meatballs

We had about 12 people over and there was nothing left. Everyone took food home and I made tons thinking we'd have leftovers.

you can find the recipe on the back of a bag of craisins OR on the ocean spray website...I sell them in the cafe and they're more popular than chocolate chip. here is the recipe.

INGREDIENTS:

2/3 cup butter or margarine, softened
2/3 cup brown sugar
2 large eggs
1 1/2 cups old-fashioned oats
1 1/2 cups flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 6-ounce package Ocean Spray® Craisins® Original Sweetened Dried Cranberries
2/3 cup white chocolate chunks or chips

DIRECTIONS:

Preheat oven to 375ºF.

Using an electric mixer, beat butter or margarine and sugar together in a medium mixing bowl until light and fluffy. Add eggs, mixing well. Combine oats, flour, baking soda and salt in a separate mixing bowl. Add to butter mixture in several additions, mixing well after each addition. Stir in sweetened dried cranberries and white chocolate chunks.

Drop by rounded teaspoonfuls onto ungreased cookie sheets. Bake for 10-12 minutes or until golden brown. Cool on wire rack.

Makes approximately 2 1/2 dozen cookies.

The white chocolate cranberry cookies are awesome!! My sister used to make them and she used the recipe from the bag.

I'm a better cook than I am a baker.

Mylene made some rice pudding for an early Thanksgiving party Sunday .. yummy ..

For thanksgiving day we will be at my sisters home, but Mylene is planning on making Bico (sweet rice) and Lumpiang Shanghai .. they have all had her lumpia before and absolutely love it, but I think that the bico will be another crowd pleaser.
