Thompson - the so-called poster boy of the conservative wing of the GOP...
Washington, DC - Fred Thompson is in the Sunshine State again today, announcing an immigration plan that earns an A+ for political pandering, but just doesn't line up with his earlier positions on the issue. Seeing a political opening, Thompson today called for stronger laws to force employers to verify workers' legal status and to increase the enforcement of existing immigration laws yet in the Senate, he supported a temporary guest worker program for agriculture workers and voted against funding to enforce laws and fines for employing illegal immigrants already on the books. Why the change of heart?
Thompson's flip-flop on immigration is just further proof that Fred lacks an agenda or reason to run. Just last week Thompson said, "I really don't know what I would do in my first 100 days." From covering up his true record on abortion to renouncing the campaign finance reform legislation he advocated for in the Senate, time and time again Fred has failed to articulate what he stands for or what he would do to tackle the issues facing our country. Thompson's inability to present a clear vision for America has clearly hurt him with voters as he went from tied for first at 27% last month to just 19%. [CNN Poll, Released 10/16/07]

Romney
As he raises campaign cash in Nevada today, smooth talking Mitt Romney is hitting the airwaves with a new radio ad aimed at convincing Iowa and New Hampshire voters to ignore his record of flip-flops and hypocrisy on immigration reform. The new ad, entitled "Exceptional," is Romney's latest desperate attempt to hide the fact that he defended the Bush-McCain immigration proposal in 2005 by saying it was different than amnesty, and supported a "path to citizenship" for undocumented workers as recently as 2006. Now, struggling to earn conservative votes, Romney has reversed himself. [Boston Globe, 3/16/07; Lowell Sun, 3/30/06; AP, 8/15/07; Boston Herald, 8/15/07]
While Romney has never hesitated to flip-flop to win over skeptical primary voters, the one thing he has refused to do is offer a clear plan of his own. Even the chairman of the Republican National Committee, Senator Mel Martinez (R-FL), has blasted Romney for offering all criticism and no solutions on immigration reform. [McClatchy Newspapers, 6/9/07]
"The only thing exceptional in smooth talking Mitt Romney's new ad is his willingness to say anything to hide his record of flip-flops and hypocrisy on immigration reform," said Democratic National Committee spokesman Damien LaVera. "Slick ads can't hide the fact that immigration is one of an endless list of issues on which Romney has refused to offer a clear vision or real plans for the future."
.........
Giuliani
Washington, DC - While Rudy Giuliani promises to be tough on immigration, his record as Mayor of New York City shows a different picture, and raises questions about the Republican candidate's swing to the far right on the issue. A day after accepting the endorsement of former California Governor Pete Wilson, best known for promoting the divisive Proposition 187 targeting immigrants, Rudy Giuliani continues to run away from his record on immigration while he campaigns in Los Angeles today.
That record shows that as mayor, Rudy Giuliani told New Yorkers in no uncertain terms, "we want to protect" undocumented workers, and "pushed policies" that favored undocumented immigrants. Giuliani even filed a lawsuit against the federal government to block efforts that would have required the city to turn in illegal immigrants who sought city services. At the time Giuliani justified his support noting, "the reality is that they are here, and they're going to remain here." [The New York Times, 4/22/07; The New York Times, 10/12/96;]
Now, scrapping for votes from conservatives angry about illegal immigration, Giuliani is distorting his record, and going so far as to promise to end illegal immigration while including border security as one of his twelve campaign commitments. [AP 8/14/07] But Giuliani has come under attack even from his own party chairman. Republican National Committee Chairman Mel Martinez, a Florida Senator, took "a swipe" at Giuliani and fellow GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney "for not offering solid solutions to America's immigration crisis." Martinez went so far as to allude to both Romney and Giuliani when he "urged" an audience "to pin down the Republican candidates on immigration when they" came to his home state. [St. Petersburg Times, 8/15/07]

Clinton
2008 presidential candidate Hillary Clinton is blasting a GOP-backed immigration bill, claiming bizarrely that the legislation would "literally criminalize . . . . probably even Jesus himself."
Clinton invoked the biblical theme on Wednesday while restating her opposition to a bill sponsored by Rep. James Sensenbrenner that would make illegally entering the U.S. a felony.
Surrounded by what the Associated Press described as "a multicultural coalition of New York immigration advocates," the former first lady ripped the GOP bill as "mean-spirited" - insisting that it flew in the face of Republicans' stated support for faith and values.
"It is certainly not in keeping with my understanding of the Scriptures," she declared, before adding: "This bill would literally criminalize the Good Samaritan and probably even Jesus himself."

Oh, if I had time, I'd dig up all the posts I made in OT about that very thing. Yes. A fair trade pact with Mexico to help boost their economy would do more to bring down the numbers of people crossing our Southern border, IMO. That is the single most important step in dealing with the influx of illegal aliens in this country, IMO.

I can't vote on your poll because you left off the most reasonable choice about the guest workers. I would be in favor of it as long as they are required to apply from their own country. I also think that your bias in posting some of the positions also taints your poll. The totally left leaning post about Thompson is out of line if you expect to get any real data from your poll. Just post the positions and leave it at that.

Fred Thompson Immigration Facts:
Voted to grant amnesty to nearly one million illegal aliens from Nicaragua and Cuba in 1997
Sen. Thompson voted to grant legal status to Nicaraguans and Cubans who had lived in the United States illegally since 1995, along with their spouses and minor unmarried children. The overall ten year impact of this legislation will be the addition of some 967,000 people to U.S. population. There was no separate vote on the amnesty, as it was included in the DC Appropriations bill. The only opportunity Senators had to vote in favor of or against the amnesty was the Mack Amendment to S.1156. The Mack Amendment passed 99-1.
..............
In 1996, removed higher fines for businesses which hire illegal aliens
Sen. Thompson, in committee consideration of S.1664 protected businesses from having to pay higher fines when they are caught hiring illegal aliens. Under the idea that current fines were not enough of a deterrent against businesses cutting their labor costs by hiring illegal aliens, the Senate immigration subcommittee approved higher fines. Various study commissions have found that the willingness of U.S. businesses to hire illegal aliens is the No. 1 incentive for foreign workers to become illegal aliens here. But Sen. Thompson voted with a 10-8 majority in the Judiciary Committee to remove the higher fines from the 1996 legislation against illegal immigration.
...........
Tried to kill voluntary pilot programs for workplace verification in 1996
Sen. Thompson voted IN FAVOR of the Abraham Amendment to S.1664. He was part of a coalition of pro-business conservatives and liberal civil libertarians who tried to use the amendment to kill the establishment of voluntary pilot programs in high-immigration states. The programs were intended to assist employers in verifying whether people they had just hired had the legal right to work in this country. Such verification is considered by many experts to be an essential tool for withdrawing the job magnet from illegal aliens. The verification system established by S.1664 did not involve an ID card. Rather it provided that when new workers wrote down their Social Security number on an application, employers could phone into a national verification system to help assure that the number was a real number and belonged to the person giving it. In earlier smaller pilot programs, businesses had hailed the verification system for making it easier for them to avoid hiring illegal aliens. Sen. Thompson was unsuccessful in stopping the voluntary verification system. The Senate tabled the by a 54-46 vote.

I have nothing against a foreign educated individual immigrating legally to the United States learning English and contributing to our Nation's greatness. In a sense America's greatness is partially rooted in the fact that our ancestors by and large were immigrants.

Thompson takes on illegal immigration in new ad WASHINGTON (CNN) – Republican presidential candidate Fred Thompson launched a new television ad in Iowa Wednesday that highlights his conservative stance on illegal immigration.
"Americans know we have an illegal immigration problem," Thompson, sitting at a diner counter, says in the 30-second ad. "And most of us have a good idea about how to start fixing it-secure our borders, and enforce the law. Giving up, by granting amnesty is not the answer."
Thompson's new ad comes the same day a new CBS/New York Times poll places him in fourth place in Iowa with 9 percent.
The commercial is likely to play well with Iowa GOP caucus-goers. The same poll out Wednesday found Hawkeye State Republican's rank illegal immigration as the No. 1 issue they want the candidates to discuss.
