OK people, once again time comes for moi to get serious and ask a serious question... crying.gif
We have -apparently- to fill in a form called "Determination of Residency Status (Leaving Canada)" from your friendly neighbourhood Canada Revenue Agency. I was wondering:

Has anyone done this before?

OR, How have you gone about telling CRA that you're bye bye and not coming back???????

Tips, advise, comments, thoughts welcome.

Gratzie, L&B.

Well this is a darn good question and I have never known anyone who has actually officially notified CRA that they left.

What is the benefit, do you know? Do you like me not answering your question with another question? blink.gif

Well, since neither Bren or moi were ever landed immigrants, we thought it would be a good idea to find out WTF happened once we left for good. We came across this form to determine residency; but are obviously stuck. Of course this is not a big deal until tax season comes along, but we'd rather be prepared!!!!

I really don't know if there is a benefit at all --- I do know that Canada and the US have some sort of a tax treaty: which I tried to read and was completely above my head: tax lingo is utterly incomprehensible for us simple mortals.

A week or two after I'd moved, I called CRA over the phone to let them know that I'd moved away from Canada. I remember calling the number listed on the webpage, which directed me to another phone number. The lady I spoke to was great in taking down my new address and assuring me that my tax package would be directed there come tax season.

Hope that helps a little bit, Len!

edit: oh, and I found this page on CRA's website about non-residents. It's all mumbledygook to me, unfortunately!

the form is NR 73 and NO you do not HAVE to fill it out. I never did. When you file your 2007 taxes with revenue canada, there is a spot on the first page that ask the date you became or CEASED to be a Cdn resident. put the date in when you entered the USA!! Some have filled out the NR 73, some don't. My attitude is if they wanted it, they would contact me and tel lme to fill it out. Why fil out more paperwork if you do not have to!!

Time for me to chime in as I always do on this topic, hey flames?? wink.gif

When I went to file my 2005 Canadian taxes (through a Canadian CPA firm that I had dealt with for years), they weren't allowed to file my taxes until I had filled out said form. So I did. And got my tax refund, and a separate letter stating that in Revenue Canada's eyes, I am no longer a Canadian resident. I didn't have a clue about this form, just heard about it when the CPA called me.

Come to think of it I have been a resident of another country twice. Like flames I just think they use the spot on the info page to determine residency.

When I returned to Canada they took my money, normally, and all was well smile.gif

From moi...I spoke to my MP....they told me to tell Revenue Canada that I was leaving but retaining my Canadian Citizenship. They said this would put my account on hold should I move back to Canada. laughing.gif Like that would happen.

I'm starting to think about my taxes in Canada. I phoned them and told them I did not want the GST cheques after I filed my taxes last year, they said no problem. They have been coming anyway and my mom sends them to me- I cash them.

From what I have heard- I will have to pay it back.
lynamon
I just called them to let them know of my move. I was receiving GST and child tax credit so I needed to put a stop on the funds as soon as possible. They will ask for the money back.

I'm going to interject in here a moment just to say something. I can't look myself right now because I'm headed for the shower and then off to teach this morning, but I do remember some time ago zyggy said something about this issue. I think he was adament, NOT to fill out this form. I think it was tied up in some type of refund for us (meaning Canadians moving to the US). I think there was a thread on this if someone wants to search for it. I'll be back later this afternoon to see if someone found it, or to search myself.

I recall the thread, but to lazy to look for it,lol There is no right or wrong answer. Your not right/wrong to fill it out or not to. As well I have visited a few other tax forums, and most recommended that you do NOT fill out the form!

As well one can change their mailing/contact addy by going to: http://www.canada.gc.ca/MGA/intro_e.html and signing up for a EPASS! I think you may require last years tax info to sign up, as you require an amount that was entered on such a line. As I recall (at least a few yrs back) Firefox would not work and had to use Internet Explorer browser to sign up!! As well one can check on past years income tax info, etc etc

Man, I am not happy today. I am so done dealing with ANY government. The only one not giving me grief is my own wacko.gif (oops unsure.gif, shouldn't have said that as it is punishable by insult to say nice things about the Mexican government around some subforums...... blink.gif )
