I’m very curious as to why most K-1 visa holders apply for a SS# before getting married, then go back and change to the married name. Is it possible to just get married then apply for the SS# in the married name thus eliminating the running back & forth?

Thanks!

We applied to get the card as quickly as possible. If the I-94 expires you have to get something official like the EAD or GC from the USCIS. Do a search on posts by MDYoung aka I quit, there are some really good links in many posts.

Well for one thing too you don't have to bring marriage cert and other docs when you're single. And to be honest you don't have to change your name in the ssn after you get married esp you have the gc already

Of course you can apply for SSN after you got married. But make it sure that the I-94 is not close to expiration or you will have to wait till you got EAD or GC. I believe one of the reasons why most of us applied for SSN before getting married is we thought it might be needed in applying for marriage license. It's really all up to you...
