We inquire to SS local Office and nobody can give us the status of the SS number/Card application. Even in email inquiry and here is their reply:

Thank you for contacting the Social Security Administration.
We’re sorry, but we can’t estimate how long it may take to receive a Social Security card. We’re working harder than ever to protect you, prevent identity theft, and ensure the integrity of your Social Security Number. To do that, we may have to verify documents you present as proof of identity. How quickly we issue the card may depend on how quickly we can verify the documents.

The first week of Oct, my wife and I went into an SS Office. Me to replace my lost card, my wife to change to married name. I received my card in about 10 days, she's still waiting for her's. she's asking me to call Monday. looks like now I know the answer I'll get.

Did mine last year in November, received it in 9 days.

I had to have USCIS call SSA to finally get my wife and daughters SS cards.
What a hassle as the 2 agencies don't normally communicate with each other except by the SAVE program which breaks down now and then.
jasman0717
Two weeks after Claudeth arrived here we went to the SSA office and applied for her card. She received the card a week later. After we were married we tried to change her last name on the card but they told us they needed something from the USCIS in her new name. When she received her EAD we went back. It took about six weeks to get the new card with her married name. I hope this is helpful.
*Len*
I decided not to wait for USCIS -since they are not, obviously, as efficient as my mother whistling.gif - and walked in to a SSA office with my passport with the I-551 stamp and my Washington ID. Applied for a number, went back in 3 days to get the number on a printed paper; and the card was in our mailbox like 10 days later.

hopefully then. my wife will receive her's in the next 1 to 2 weeks good.gif

They said it will take 1-4 weeks for my SSN card to arrived because they need to verify something with my status from the DHS. In the system it shows that my EAD is in my maiden name while it is obviously on my married name already in the card. Weird but that's the way it is so i'll just have to wait. Anyway, they assigned me a # and gave me a letter that I can show to a prospect employer in case i wanted to work already. My daughter's SSN card arrived after 1 week of application.
Jabberwocky
My wife's arrived within a week of applying as well as my stepson's. It's a bit late for you, but the easiest way is to first apply for a SS# in your maiden name, prior to AOS and before your I-94 expires. Then apply for a new card with your married name once you have your marriage license. Because you applied with your married name, they have to do the extra verying of who you were with your maiden name and then your married name...in effect they are having to do 2 processes before issuing you a card, which is why the delay.

Yes I am still waiting for mine and it sucks.
I applied for it 25 September and still waiting for it sad.gif
My problem was that I did not wait 2 weeks after entering the US,which you should do (did not know that then)
If you go to the SSN office earlier than that, they have to "do it manually" etc. which really sucks!!!
Anybody else out there that did not wait the 2 weeks,if so how long did it take until you had it???

we waited for 3 months after POE and still did not receive a SS card. we then went directly to the SS office and applied again. we receive the SS card 10 days after applying. the lady at the SS office said they had lots of people coming in and reapplying for a SS card.

Mononoke28
The Immigration officer at POE in MIA told us that even though we had checked the SS box on the DS-230, that we should go right away to the SSA office. We did just that and went the next day, the lady told us that they needed to wait for Immigration to enter all his data in the system so that they could issue the card and that it would take between 2-4 weeks. We're on week 5 and still nothing. My husband called last week and they told him it wasn't 4 weeks, that it was actually 8 weeks. rolleyes.gif

Hi all. It has been 4 weeks since my husband's POE, and he still hasn't received his SS#. I checked out the SSA website, and it had a whole page dedicated to immigrants who apply for a SS# on the immigration paperwork. This is what my husband did. Anyway, on the website it says that you should call the toll free number for SSA if you don't receive your card within 3 weeks. After waiting on hold for 20 minutes, my husband finally got through to a representative. She told him that it takes 12 weeks to receive the social security card! I took the phone away from my husband, and told the woman what I read on the website. She told me that it takes 3 weeks for American citizen replacement cards, and that immigrant cards take 12 weeks. I told her that they need to change the website if that's the wrong information. She gave me her "12 weeks" speech again and then promptly hung up on me! I am not impressed. We're going to the social security office today, so I'll post with details.

After 4 weeks, my husband hasn't even received his "welcome to America" letter. Has it taken this long for anyone else?

Good luck to everyone,
Natalie
Mononoke28
Oh my gosh, are you kidding me? My husband got the same speech but his was "8 weeks" not 12, hopefully not 12!! And they were also very rude to him.

He also hasn't received his green card nor his "Welcome to America" letter and it's been 5 weeks today.

Please let us know what you find out.

Thanks a bunch!!

Diana
*Len*
Man, this is crazeeeee!!! 12 weeks???? Why don't you go to a SSA office and apply in person? It will be much quicker.
As per the Welcome letter/Green card, I'm also on week 5 and counting.... mad.gif

For those of you who went into an office to apply for, or re-apply for your SSN, I have heard that they will give you your new SSN #, and you just have to wait for the card to arrive in the mail. Is that so? (once they enter you into the system, are they able to give you a number right away?)
'my_destiny'
Im from California. My SS card arrived less than 3 weeks after we applied under my married name.
Hope you will have yours soon!
Have a great day!

Same here,I applied for mine last week of September and still nothing.
That just shows how professional they are by just hanging up,people like that should get fired.
I dont have a welcome letter either, did not know that I should get one anyway LOL
Mononoke28
Well guess what? Now I know why we don't have his SS card yet. We just called the USCIS and they were total morons who had no idea what we were talking about, they kept asking for his WAC #. Idiots. But anyway, we were transferred to a "especialized" agent, she asked for his A# and told us he's still not in the system. Can you believe that? It's been 5 weeks and they haven't entered his info in the system. So she said to wait another 3-4 weeks and if we still don't receive anything that we need to make an infopass appointment to go in person and have them enter his info in the system.

Hi. Went to the social security office today. The employee there was really nice and helpful with my husband's questions. She looked up his passport info on the computer, and found that he hasn't been entered in the system yet. It will be 5 weeks on thursday since his POE. She told us that she couldn't do anything right now, but that if he doesn't receive a social security number in the mail by his 8th week, he should come back to the office to apply for one.

I was comparing our case to other visa journey timelines before my husband's POE, and it seemed like we were really on track and things were moving on schedule. But almost everyone else who was a few weeks ahead of our POE seems to have gotten their social security cards in 3 weeks. Do you think that USCIS is just really busy now, because so many people applied for their visas before the application price went up? I feel so awful for my husband. I'll be starting a job soon, and he'll just have to sit around for awhile and wait. But at least we're together!

Diana, where does someone go for an infopass appointment? I hope none of us end up having to do that!!

Natalie

I'm glad I'm not the only one waiting for them to enter his stuff in the system. I'm going to try to call every week to find out what is going on and will be posting it in here.

I called the USCIS again today and they told me that my husband's info was finally entered in the system on 11/08/07 and that his card is now in production, so we should get it withing 2-3 weeks. Hopefully we'll get his social then as well.

My husband arrived on the 20th of September and we just got his welcome to America letter with a receipt date of 11-2-07. I took the receipt number and checked the status online today on the USCIS website and it says that his card production was ordered on November 8th and will be mailed within 30 days. Also, I wonder if this is what has been holding up his SS card???
This whole business is driving me nuts. I can't wait until he gets his social security card number so that he can get his drivers license. I'm tired of playing taxi driver.

At least you got a Welcome to America letter. We haven't gotten anything. The lady at the DHS told me that they are behind entering all the new immigrant visas in the system so that's why it's taking so long. This is probably why he hasn't gotten his SS card yet. But you should check with the SSA office as soon as he gets his green card in the mail.

Diana-
Happy to hear that your husband's info has finally been entered in the system! Since we arrived in America on the 4th of October, I'll assume that my husband's info isn't far behind. Thanks for keeping me updated! We'll go to SSA as soon as we get his green card.

I feel like a taxi driver too! I was spoiled being driven around when I lived in England. Now I do all of the driving. By the time he gets his social security card, it's going to be snowing here in Wisconsin. That'll be a fun road test!

Im from California. My SS card arrived less than 3 weeks after we applied under my married name.

There doesn't appear to be much consistency in how they're handled, but my situation is similar to the above. I applied for mine in my married name 3 weeks after arriving in the US and 2 1/2 weeks after getting married. I was told that it would arrive in about 10 days, and it arrived in 11 days. (The 10th day was a Sunday.)

If a person age 18 or older checked off on the DDS-230 to be assigned an SSN and has not received the card within 3 weeks, you need to head into an SSA office with your passport and MRIV and birth certificate. Calling the 800# is a waste of time, because 1 they probably have no idea what you are talking about, 2 if you have been assigned an SSN they aren't supposed to give it out over the phone and 3 if you haven't been assigned an SSN or have a pending application from the DS-230 check off you will need to submit an application at an SSA office.

Now once you submit an application at an SSA office it's possible to be waiting 12 weeks, just depends on how long it takes to verify your status. If you are lucky they can do it while you are in the office.

It really shouldn't matter which name you use to apply with if you have a marriage certificate, but a lot of people at SSA office don't know the POMS procedure and start making up stuff when you have K-1 status and apply with your married name, like telling people they now have to apply for a K-3 visa.

RM 00203.210 C. Procedure - Immigration Document as Evidence of Legal Name

When an alien applies for an SSN card, SSA presumes the name on the immigration document is the legal name unless the applicant presents evidence of a legal name change (e.g., marriage) that occurred after the immigration document was issued.

RM 00203.210 Changing Numident Name Data:

http://policy.ssa.gov/poms.nsf/lnx/0100203210

RM 00203.735 Requesting Online (Primary) Verification By SAVE:

http://web.archive.org/web/20051002025945/.../lnx/0100203735

If the applicant has changed his/her name after an immigration document, i.e. I-94, was issued, e.g., married and is now using the married name, but has not obtained a corrected immigration document showing the new name; this is not a name discrepancy for enumeration purposes, i.e. SAVE clearance, if the applicant can provide an acceptable legal name change document to establish the new name.

RM 00203.735 was removed from the SSA Website as sensitive procedure and it has a new RM 00203 section number, but it still reads the same.

The two weeks thing isn't really necessary if the SSA office does what they are supposed to do. If you apply before you have been here 10 days and you don't verify through the initial SAVE verification the office is supposed to wait until you have been here 10 days and try it again before going to the next step of the verification process.

Have you gone back to the office to see if they tried to verify your status again through the initial SAVE verification and if that didn't work, submitted the secondary electronic request and if that came back requesting to see your documents has a G-845 been sent to the verification office along with a copy of your documents?

Not sure what you are asking, but if you have been assigned an SSN, any SSA office can tell you the number without having to wait for the card to arrive in the mail.

If you have been assigned an SSN it will remain your number throughout your lifetime and you are issued a replacement card with the same number if you haven't received the original card within 14 days of the date the card was issued.

With Enumeration At Entry three things can happen:

1. The information is not transmitted to SSA and you have to go into an SSA office to apply

2. It partially transmitted and there will be a pending SSN application. If the reason it didn't fully process can be corrected you will be assigned an SSN and issued a card. Otherwise you will need to submit an application at an SSA office

3 Everything works and the SSN card is mailed to the same address as the I-551 card.

K-1 status and having checked off on the DS-230 with an immigrant visa are totally different with what you need to do about getting an SSN. With a K-1 you need to go into an SSA office ASAP after getting here to apply, with the DS-230 process you need to wait 3 weeks to see if the SSN is assigned and card is issued before going to an SSA office to apply.
