Hi all,

Well I passed the final screening for my State Security Guard licence, and will be officially starting work as a mall ninja tommorow!

7am-3pm shifts, which will be a kick up the backside, but it's $11/hour which is pretty good IMHO for an entry level job to see me through to the new year. The mall's in a very nice part of town, mostly posh clientele, so nothing too bad to deal with - kind of half guest services helping people out, as well as the usual checking locks, CCTV etc etc in security work.

Thanks for the good wishes guys - FYI Mall Ninja is slang for a Security Guard. I'll basically be patrolling the mall, watching for shoplifters, checking the carparks for any thieves etc. Also during the christmas season if anyone whose bought loads of presents wants an escort to their car we provide that too, as well as general lost & found services.

I think escorting customers to their cars with parcels is an excellent idea, especially for women.

LOL how you call yourself a Mall Ninja! Congrats on the new job!!! We call people who love to hang out at the mall all time, mall rats...but I think these days going to the mall has become an American pasttime since everything is centered aroud the mall (i.e. movie theaters, restaurants, etc..)

I got a call for a seasonal job for a clothing store, a day after getting a phone interview with a very cool Coop I'd prefer to work at... So if the Coop doesn't call again next week for a personal interview, I'll be selling clothes for the next 3 months!! I can't wait to be out of the house and making money!

Raymaga - one thing I do like about this mall, is that there is always an abundance of security officers around, which means that not only is backup readily available, but it's never a problem to have people available for the escort duties. As the Mall Manager says "It doesn't matter if we have the best stores around, if our customers don't feel safe then we have failed".

Tom&Tata - we get a variety of discounts on certain stores, usually it's 10-20% off, or in the case of places like cinnabon, a meal deal...which helps with lunch!

Anna Sif - Best of luck with your new job, no matter which one it ends up being! Although it will be tough to get used to the schedule at first, like you said, it's definately good to be out the house and earning some $'s!

Thanks for the further replies! Have been working there about a week and a half, and am really enjoying it - every day is different, from helping lost kids find their parents, keeping fire lanes clear, taking crime reports etc. I get on with all the people there, only a couple are a bit quiet but they're still fine to work with.

My Halloween costume was a Mall Ninja - basically a Ninja costume bought from a store, with some sponsorship labels from stores like Macys, Saks 5th avenue etc.
