Seems like solving our problems via vj is the in thing to do so here goes nothing...

My ex is a d-head and he hasn't had the kids in three weekends because he's a pro-mod drag racer and keeps flying all over the country to race. (this is not his real line of work btw it's just a hobby he does on the weekends).

Anyhoo he called to tell me that his timeshare week in Aruba is the following week which will bring the weekends that the kids don't see him up to 5. He offered to have them go with him but it's a school week. Our school system frowns upon pulling the kids out to vacation.

What do I do?

This is a yes and no type thing for me. I believe in doing all I can to make sure my kids see their father. However, if it infringes on their schooling, it is a definate no. School is most important. Let him figure out a way to work his life around so as to see them when it is best for them.

if otherwise hes a good dad, make arrangement to get their lesson ahead so they can do them. How often do they get a chance like this (if you feel safe with the situation)

Pulling them out of school for a week? Erm...NO.
SteveLaura
How old are the kids?
Jenn!
I would say absolutely not. Not saying this is you, doodle, but it really gets me how some parents will be the first to criticize their school system or their kids' teachers, but then they do things like pull the kids out for vacations without thinking about the effect that has on the teacher and the classmates.

yes, the age is a factor

Aww send them to Aruba, they keep kids chained in school for 12 years - they will have fun, they will learn something useful and they will get to see their Dad.

They're 10 and 11.

They don't wanna go so now it's a mute point. lol.

I picked them up after work and said, "kids, daddy wants to take you to Aruba for a week, do you wanna go?" and they said, "NOOOOO we don't want to miss school!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

Sometimes I wonder if they're really mine. I used to do anything to get out of going to school!!!!! laughing.gif laughing.gif

Thanks for the help though guys!

My answer is no because they'd be missing a week of school.
I'm a teacher and I don't get why parents take their kids out of school during the year for vacations, trips, or just to let them stay home.
We have SO MANY vacations that another time would be better.

In my opinion, the kids having a week with Dad is more important than a week away from school. They will not remember the week missed from school but memories with their Dad last a lifetime. What a great opportunity for your kids.

On the other side of it, the parents' jobs don't let them have off whenever the kids are off, so sometimes they have to go away for things during the school year like weddings, family events, emergencies etc. I liked school as a kid but I missed school for short amounts of times for trips too and don't regret it, they are great memories, it didn't effect my grades.

I agree. Homeschooling is allowed, so just ask the teachers what they will be going over for those days and make sure you spend time doing the same. In my mind, travel and new social activities are part of education.

If I haven't already said so, congratulations to you Stina! Hope things are going well for you.
