hi Dear!
I just have question about the james shorcut. For I-864, I did not use the james shorcut, but when I got the real barcode sheet from NVC, i went to james shortcut and the one they had there, I download it and change it to my case # and then print it. It was the same thing the NVC sent me. SO why do I have to generate a barcode??

Now, I see the one for DS-230 and the same thing, but I have not getten my DS-230 from NVC yet.
So, do I have to generate the barcode or can I just change on the form they have in James shortcut!! Please help!!

I just replied to your PM message you sent me regarding this same question.

If you do not want to wait for the actual coversheets to arrive, then you can use James' shortcuts to generate your own. Each case at the NVC is different and has its own barcode based on the case # assigned to it.

Hi Kim,

I'm not 100% sure that I am understanding your question, but basically the procedure is:

NVC says that have mailed DS-230 ----> Per James's shortcuts you make up the coversheet, generate the barcode and insert the generated barcode on to James's coversheet ----> download the DS-230 and fill it out ----> Gather any documents you need to send to NVC

Put the Barcode sheet, DS-230 and documents in the mail to NVC.

If I am understanding you correctly you are waiting for the mail from the NVC before generating the barcodes/changing James's coversheets?

The whole idea of James's shortcuts is to shorten the time by mailing out the document before you receive it from NVC.

Thank you for your help! Now I got it. The barcode is unique for each case even though it looks almost the same. Good luck to you!!

There you go!

Yeah, each barcode is different depending on the case number. Just like products you buy at a grocery store. Each one is unique.

I am still not understanding this, so if someone can explain it to me more slowly and with detail, that would be much appreciated:

If each case is unique, how is it possible to generate a barcode yourself, for your own case??? How can you be sure that will match what NVC sends you and their barcode for your case?? When you generate a barcode and send it in with your documents, is the NVC able to scan it in and come up with your info?? I don't get it....

Please help, because I also want to shorten the wait time by doing any shortcuts, so any help would be great!

Thanks!

If you generate the barcode using JSC, you wil need to enter your case number and when NVC scan that barcode, it will show your case#. I think as Diana said, it works like everthing you buy at your grossary store, each of them have a uniuqe barcode. The one NVC sends you and the one you can generate through James shorcut are same just like two identical products have same barcode at your grossary store. Hope it helps! Good luck!!

So when you generate this Barcode, do you actually place it on the Form itself, the I-864?? Or is it just on a separate page by itself that you send in along with your filled out Form? Somebody said that you should actually write your NVC case number on all documents that you submit, to help reduce the chances of lost documents at NVC....

When you generate the barcode, you place it on the I-864 coversheet, it is a separate page along with the I-864 form. Yes you should write your case# on all documents and its pages to avoid loss of any documents. Please read the James Shortcut carefully, it will guide you step by step on how to do them.
Mononoke28
James' shortcuts give you a link of where to go to generate the barcode, it tells you how to do it step by step. They also have copies of what the coversheets look like. You copy the coversheet and paste the barcode you created earlier. It's a "fake" but it looks exactly the same.

For the DS-230 Shortcut, you should only be generating a barcode to place on one page right? I mean, when you submit the DS-230, you only include with it one coversheet, or is it 2 coversheets? I thought that you only include with it the Barcode coversheet, with teh barcode on the bottom center of the sheet....so if you follow JSC link, it takes you to that one coversheet with the barcode U are supposed to replace with the one that you generate?

What's this about the cover letter with the blue statue of liberty logo on top left of page, and the barcode on top left part of page also? Are you supposed to generat one like that also, and submit back to NVC??? I don't understand that part of it, so if someone can please help out here, that would be greatly appreciated....Thanks a bunch!

The DS230 paragraph from JSC should have explain or provided you the step by step instructions. If you follow them to the tee then you should be ok. The barcode generation clearly explains what you needed them for and where to place each barcode and all other information such as the names of the petitioner, beneficiary, dates and address. If you follow JSC carefully, it will also give you what documents you need to send NVC including coversheets.
Mononoke28
Trekkin as Rina said, make sure you read James' shortcuts word for word pages 10 & 11. There is a difference between a cover letter and a coversheet. A cover letter is just an optional letter you type to let the NVC to let them know that you're sending X form with the corresponding documentation. Ie.: Dear NVC, my name is so and so and this package contains form DS-230, birth certificate, passport photocopy, etc. etc.

A COVERSHEET is the actual document/page that the NVC generates to let you know that they're ready to receive your documents. On page 11 of the Timesavers' thread you will find version 2.0 of the coversheet, it has the blue statue of liberty, barcode on top (small font) your name and address, and all the way at the bottom you put your case #.

Again, follow James' shortcuts WORD for WORD and you'll be ok. If you still don't feel comfortable doing it, then it's best to wait for the actual coversheet to be delivered.

Thank you so much!! You're a lifesaver. That was very helpful, exactly what I was looking for; this was mising from the JSC V2; it had a link to an old document apparently, does not look like this at all....so I am very grateful for your help, this should get me going to generate my barcode and coversheet.
