So in light of Candy's recent experience at
Hotel La Tour I was thinking that maybe everyone who has stayed in a hotel near the Montreal Consulate could share their experience so we have some kind of reference?

When I went for my interview (years and years ago now) I stayed at the
Youth Hostel. Functional, cheap, but noisy (there's no curfew). I was broke at the time. Its about a half hour walk to the consulate. One night in a shared room is I think $22 + $2 for linens during high season. $19 for off season. Rooms were clean and very cramped, but beds were comfy.
Whenever I went to Montreal on business, I stayed at the
Sheraton on Rene Levesque. Its right across the street from the train station, and maybe a 15 minute walk to the consulate. Nice, but very expensive though. ($175 to $200+ per night).

i stayed there too... it isn't a 4 star hotel by any means but it served its purpose.... it is an easy walk to the consulate and the room was basic but it had everything I needed including a little kitchen...

I went to a grocery store I found about a block down the street and bought myself a few groceries... it sure saved on eating out....

I'm sorry that Candy's experience was a not so good one. My room was very clean at La Tour, and especially the bathroom!!! Had a small kitchen in it with a microwave. The TV was a little smaller than I'm used to, but I still managed to see Grey's Anatomy!!! (haha)... The staff was very friendly, and I prefer a harder matress than a soft one, so my bed was fine. I also don't think I could've gotten any closer to the Consulate, a 2 min walk!! A few people I have met who also went to Montreal, they all stayed there too, they recommended it to me. Everyone said the same thing: Its not the Ritz, but its clean and it will do for a night or two and very close!!!!

I stayed at the
Hyatt which is just about a block away from the Consulate. It was a great place to stay and the staff is extremely friendly. The rooms were a little small, but the beds were extremely comfortable. You also get a free breakfast with your stay and it's really good, it's not like a continental buffet, there's hot foods and an omelet station too. I highly recommend it.

I stayed at the Days Inn. It is the newer one down town and it's about 5 blocks from the consulate. There is a Holiday Inn Express the next block closer to the consulate and. It was new and super clean. The rooms aren't huge and are geared towards the business traveller. I don't beleive there was a pool but there is a in restaurant and lounge. I tried to book in at the La Tour but it was booked up - Jazz festival was starting the next day
I'd recommend the Days but it wasn't the cheapest option and the 5 or 6 block walk in the winter time might not be so fun.

we stayed at Rayon Vert-a b&b on the plateau. it was pretty cheap$80/night. even though further away, it still took us less than 15 minutes to get to the consulate-1 block to the Mont Royal metro station then 2 block to the consulate from the Place-des-Arms stop. the room was cute, breakfast good, and the owner really friendly and helpful. and it was on the Plateau-I love the Plateau.

I'm another one that stayed at LaTour Centreville with no complaints. I wanted to be close to the consulate and within walking distance of the shuttle from the airport without paying an arm and a leg, and this fit the bill. I appreciated the locked luggage room that I was allowed to use and the kind staff.

Seems to be a stickup for la tour thread, lol I stayed there and it was fine! Was clean, had a small kitchen with a fridge to keep my beer cold for the 2 nights I was there. Front desk staff were very friendly. It sort of had a gym,lol Was pretty run down, and the pool they had was small. Would i stay there again?? If it was just myself sure, but if I had my spouse with me, most likely not, would prefer something a bit more plush!! Can't beat its closeness to the consualte, and there is a Timmy's just up the street.

My Husband won't care if it's plush or not - and the handy dandy location makes it a winner I think.

I've stayed at the Sheraton (also on business

.... maybe we've met, Reba!) and it was quite nice.
My husband and I stayed at
The Marriott Residence Inn when we went for our interview, which is just around the corner from the Sheraton. It was lovely, and within walking distance of everything. There were some fantastic restaurants on our street, and a lovely bakery. (mmmmm. I love French cooking and baking.) It includes a really nice hot breakfast and a "Manager's Reception" each evening, so there's really no need to pay extra and eat out unless you want to experience the city.
If you go to
Tourisme Montreal you can get some really great last minute deals.

We stayed at the La Tour Centre-Ville. In my humble opinion, 2 star at best. It was clean and extremely close to the consulate, that is about the best I can say for it. The staff was nice enough but they messed up our reservation (twin beds instead of a queen) and were unwilling and or unable to remedy the error or provide compensation. Oh, and if you drive, don't bring anything too big. My Highlander barely fit under the door and the parking is very tight and narrow. My fiancee adds that the water is very hard.

The train station is immediately below the building, with all kinds of great shopping and eating. I highly recommend the Marriott Residence Inn. So, my Husband stayed at
Chateau L'argoat in Montreal and took these pics - he said it was alright and the bed is very comfortable. This is room 26 (it is actually what the room is 'called' when you look at the room descriptions online. It has a memory foam bed which is apparently very very comfortable and it is at the back of the hotel - so very quiet as well.
It is $110 a night for 1 person, although they charged him $120, because they couldn't seem to figure out that it was only him staying the night (although emails were exchanged).
So with taxes etc it came to $134.52

I stayed at the Sheraton on Rene-Leveques. Normally it is very expensive but my sister and I got a double room for 109.00 per night. I'm guessing the room was cheap because i did tons of searching on the internet for deals AND it was the off season for Montreal. This hotel is very close to the consulate and we really enjoyed it particularly because it was so cold outside. We utilized the gym, pool, and hot tub which was a really nice bonus.
I was going to stay at the old hat Centre Ville but the Sheraton was like the same price so why the hell not!!!

We're at the Days Inn Downtown, but we also rented a car since we are staying thru the week and since cars are so cheap to rent now, way cheaper than a taxi and freedom to go to the casino obv. Pretty confusing if you're driving though lol. Lots of construction going on by the consulate though, so watch out for detours. Might be too far to walk to the consulate due to the winter weather starting. Up the road a bit on the same street (rene - levesque), but a little closer to the consulate, there is a holiday in express and a travel lodge i saw.

Hi,
My husband used priceline.com and bid for our hotel and got our hotel for $80 +tax = $100US for a one night stay at Hyatt a 3 1/2 to 4 star hotel when we went for my interview this week. And as soon as we checked in we we're upgraded to a nicer room by the receptionist. The hotel is clean with restaurant in the hotel and around the area, pool and I believe a spa service like massage. It has a link to a mall too. It's 2 blocks and 1 street turn from the US Consulate office along St. Catherine St.

I booked my stay at the
W Montreal, got a great rate $172/night for 3 nights. I expect to stay a few days in Montreal to tour the city since I've never been there. It's also only 0.5 km from the Embassy so that should be like a 5 min walk. I expect it to be all that W Hotels are, nice, ultra-modern and trendy. They are running a special now, if you book 2 nights you get the 3rd free when reserving with any AMEX card. I'm a week away from my interview, very excited and nervous.

Good deal! I didn't know there was one in Montreal. We stayed one night a couple of years ago at the W at Union Square in NYC. It was one of the nicest places we have ever stayed but very $$$. Hi,
Hyatt Regency the one at Jeanne Mance St. is close to the consulate. That's where we stayed around 5 - 7 minutes walk. The hotel is clean and nice and have restaurant in the building. There's a starbucks across the hotel but don't open until 7 am or later I think. Breakfast service at the hotel if you want to order I think starts at 6:30 am
You can either take Rene Levesque or St. Catherine. I took Rene Levesque as I feel there's more light on this side compared to the St. Catherine at the corner of the hotel to St. Alexandre as there's construction along St. Catherine. Around 2 block and from the hotel. Do wear something that will keep you warm while waiting in line early in the morning as it can get really cold.
There's coffee, soda and water vending machine up at 19th floor waiting area and another vending machine with chips, cookies, chocolates and candies. I don't think there's coin changing machine around so have some change if you think you might need to purchase something to eat while waiting. There's washroom available on that floor too.
Do go early there's not too many people ahead of you.
