DV-2009, the 2007 Green Card Lottery Begins on October 3rd

WASHINGTON, DC - The Diversity Immigrant Visa Program, commonly known as the Green Card Lottery, starts at 12.00 pm on October 3rd, 2007. The U.S. Department of State continues to encourage all applicants to the 2007 Green Card Lottery (DV-2009) to submit their applications early in the two-month registration period. It is important to understand that being selected in the lottery does not automatically guarantee a green card. The requirements are strict and many applicants selected in the lottery do not receive a green card because they do not meet the educational or professional requirements. There are 50,000 immigrant visas (Green Cards) available in the 2007 Green Card Lottery (DV-2009). The odds of being selected depend on the total number of eligible entries received by the Department of State. There are also country quotas, which causes some countries to receive more Green Cards than others. Citizens of most countries qualify for the visa lottery program, however there are few exceptions. The full list of eligible countries can be found in the Green Card Lottery Application Guide.

Warning: It is important to not fall victim to Green Card Lottery scams. Many fraudulent websites claim to be the official Green Card Lottery website. These fraudulent websites charge a fee to submit Green Card Lottery applications. There is no cost to submit an application. Click here to learn more.

Is Canada an eligible country?

Last I checked (10 years ago), it wasn't, and nor was India--so I would have been shafted had I even attempted this route.

A friend of mine from England won the lottery and has been here over ten years now.

Canadians aren't eligible, but if your spouse is from another country it's worth checking!

I entered once, needless to say - wasn't chosen.

However I did win Grey cup tickets one year in a draw and I also won a wine decanter last year in an online contest good.gif

blink.gif I find this kind of odd. Why is there a Green Card Lottery when it's such a big deal for us to come to the U.S. wacko.gif

Canadians have not been eligible for at least the last 10 years, maybe longer. Also excluded are all other countries that have large numbers of people who immigrate to the US (India, Pakistan, The Philipines, Great Britain excluding Northern Ireland, Mexico, etc.) You might luck out and have a spouse who is eligible.

It, what's the word...SUCKS!!!!!

But I heard it depends on your country of birth.

Being born in Oman, apparently, I would have had a pretty good chance.

oh well

If you have citizenship still to a country that is eligible for the lottery, yes go ahead and try. But Canada has not been eligible for the lottery for quite a long time.
thetreble
Yep. We aren't eligible as Canadian born. Ahh the green card lottery....winning the american dream! hahah jest.gif

The point is to add "diversity" from different countries. There's also a limited number available in the "lottery". With family based immigration (fiance/spousal) there's no limit if your fiance/spouse is a USC and it's almost guaranteed that you'll get LPR status and will be able to apply for citizenship after 3 years of receiving your GC.

"Almost guaranteed" provided of course there isn't anything that makes someone ineligible, relationship isn't considered fraudulent, you apply to lift conditions if you get a conditional GC, etc.

And Canada is excluded because there is so many different visa's and status that Canadians qualify for that they feel Canadians is already represented in the US at a high enough level as it is, so no need to get even more in.

One of my friends from Ireland got here by the lottery. Can't recall too much what she told me about it, but I'm curious if they can apply for citizenship based on that or not. I know work related GC's it's 5 years, and marriage based GC's it's 3 years, but I don't know what the lottery GC's can do? I would think it's probably 5 years...
misa
Yeah, that's true that there are a lot of different ways that a Canadian can get here relatively easily if they are not going the GC route. The first one that comes to mind is TN. For other countries, it's not that easy.
