I (the USC) was able to insure C.'s Canadian titled car through GEICO, which meant I could drive it. GEICO said we had fifteen days to get the plates on the van (which we did), but we had the policy practically immediately.

Only the converse. Judging from another thread I read on here quite a while back, and Ontario licensed driver cannot drive a Michigan plated vehicle in Ontario.

I know that Canadian regulations do prohibit it (Canadian driving US titled vehicles). As far as US regulations, I knew of Canadian Construction surperintendents driving US trucks across the border all the time. Regulations regarding trucking is from the US DOT and is usually enforced by the individual states. In Michigan, the Michigan State Police Commercial Carrier Division is responsible for enforcing US DOT regulations.
In addition, the enployer's insurance may have something to say about non Canadian drivers driving Canadian titled vehicles in terms of worker's comp coverage, liability coverage, etc.
