Is there a way to fix an error made on a petition (I-130)?

It depends on what error you made. Documents sent or not sent? Information noted? If they find that error, it will likely be RFE'd

We decided not to bring her son over so when i filled out the petition, I didn't put him on it thinking it was a petition for him as well. so under her children we left it blank.

From what I know if you are filing for CR1/IR1, you need a separate I-130 form for her son. I could be wrong. But yes, you have to put the son's name on the I-130 application for her. You could either send a letter to USCIS (which I think where your case is still based from your timeline) or you can give them a call to get information how you can correct that.

Since you also filed an I-129F, did you list the child on that petition?
When you are asked a question on an immigration form, always answer it truthfully. Lies will get you into big trouble, even lies of omission.

So, now you want to bring him? No problem. Just notify the Consulate and ask them to send a packet three for him. They'll do it, even if he was never listed.
You can file his I-130 now or wait until you file AOS.

It sounds like they don't want to bring him but just that they're concerned that about the I-130 being incorrect because it makes it look like she has no children.

ok I have a follow up on this
I called USCIS this morning and talked to Mary, She took the information over the phone and said if I wanted to, I could also send them a leeter explaining but it is not nessessary. She said it would be posted to my petition in 45 days.
On a side note she also told me not to expect my NOA2 for another 6 months.

Just a suggestion.
whether you have the intention or not to bring the child, send them (USCIS) a letter to correct and have your petition ammended by adding the child's information in.
Good luck on your journey!
