Rob received his notice/summons to appear for his Naturalization Oath Ceremony on October 1.

On it, it states that proper attire should be worn.

My question is this, what exactly IS proper attire???
Easy for me as a spectator, I can wear a dress but what should Rob wear?
Can he wear dress slacks and a shirt or should we go buy a suit?

Help !!!!! ???????? Anyone who's already had their ceremony that can tell me what people there were wearing?????

Dont go in shorts and Tee-shirt. Dress business casual at least

He should dress as if he was going to a job interview, nice pants, shirt and shoes. Tie optional.

I found a phone number for the US District Court Clerk's Office where the Ceremony is to take place and they told me that since this occasion will be held in a US District Court Office, the proper attire for men in a courtroom is suit and tie!!

Off to the mall we go!

Hmmmm - interesting. I wonder what they would look on as "proper" for female oath takers. I've a way to go yet, they haven't even cashed my cheque, but may as well get organised! I haven't worn a dress for many years - I suppose I'll have to go buy a trouser suit a la Hillary Clinton

I seriously doubt that your husband won't get his Naturalization Certificate if he's not wearing a suit. But it's always nice to have a suit for any other ocassion.

Guys, how about what to wear for the interview? I understand no jeans, but is it no open toes or anything like that?

To my interview and oath ceremony I wore what I usually wear to go to work. Slacks and a nice blouse with nice shoes. There were some people there who I guess didn't get the memo and even wore "yoga" pants, which to me are pretty much sweat pants. It's just a ceremony, so as long as you get your certificate and you look nice in your pictures, you should be fine.

No jeans? It probably depends on the state of the jeans. Good dressy ones, no rips or abrasions, maybe the trouser style ones, ought to look fine with an appropriate shirt or jacket. That's probably what I'll wear for the interview.

The oath ceremony is a little different though, especially if it's held in a very formal setting - state capitol or courthouse. It then it would more a matter of courtesy to dress in formal fashion - a bit like going to weddings and funerals, I guess.

Are you serious? I would love to wear jeans as I fell more comfy in them. I wouldn`t mind wearing a nice jacket (something like white linen one) and nice shoes with the jeans, but not sure if it`s ok. I am in FL.

I have just talked to an officer about if jeans are ok, and he didn`t recommend that. He said I should be wearing a dress or a suit. Bummer... Need to loose some pounds before my nice clothes can fit me

I can't imagine going to an oath ceremony in anything less formal than a suit, crisp shirt, tie and leather shoes!!

When I went for mine - I had dress shirt, pants, shoes and a tie (no coat or jacket - it was a warm month). I had a tie on cause I drove from work for the ceremony and back to work after that. Most people were dressed in casual attire (this was in a US federal court) - many jeans and some shorts and a few warm-up pants/pajamas. Of course some were dressed in suits and formal dresses also. My take is do what makes you feel comfortable. I wasn't interested in pictures being taken but several people were with their families and were taking group pictures. My advice, do what makes you comfortable. I treat it similar to going to a casino or a concert - you dress to be comfortable and fitting your mood and taste (I am not a suit and tie person). I see people in suits in casinos (not my style), in shorts (gets cold sometimes) and any and every imaginable clothes, I go in jeans or khakis and sports or T-shirts.
Don't stress too much and don't spend money on a suit just for this - if you want to - buy one for work/business purposes and use it for this. Have fun

Was he talking about the cememony or the interview though? I really can't see anything wrong with good jeans and dressy jacket for the interview, - it's only with a civil servant for goodness sake - not the Prez!

Like others have said - let's be comfortable and let's not drain our bank account to buy clothes we'll probably never wear again - our immigration has cost us a lot already!!!

You know I didn't even read the proper attire part. I wore jeans and a tshirt to my interview and the oath ceremony right after. Been a US citizen for a year now and they haven't asked me to retake the oath with a nice dress on :-) Now that I look back most people at the ceremony were in casual or business casual. Nice slacks and shirt would be fine I think.

I just cant believe I never even thought about attire when I went!
