Does anyone have any recommendations for medical insurance for a female person temporarily.

I'm self-employed and I cannot add my fiancee to my insurance coverage until she's my wife. I was wondering if you guys have any suggestions or gotchas for medical insurance plans and companies.

I just found this on Google, you may want to take a peek at this: http://www.insurancequest.com/Internationa...tor/inboundusa/

Another alternative is to check what kind of medical insurance your fiancee had in her home country, and determine whether she is covered for a certain amount of time once she's crossed into the US. For example, I know my health insurance covers me for a month once I move out of Canada (and similarly, I'm not able to go on my fiance's health insurance until I become his wife, which puts a bit of a time limit on things).

Perhaps some kind of travel insurance would work? you can get policies that cover longer periods..

When she comes over on the K1 visa, travel insurance would not be applicable as the fiance is an intended immigrant. Travel insurance policies all have a clause excluding coverage for intending immigrants cos the person is no longer considered a traveler. As nini and bee noted above, you will need to acquire immigrant insurance to cover her in the event of any illness/injury.

I cannot speak from experience because I didn't get health insurance until we were married, but I would suggest speaking to some insurance companies to see if they would cover her. This may not apply, but I was able to get insured on my (then) fiance's car even though I was in the country on a visa and not married. There might be some companies who will still insure someone who is now living in the country?

My fiancee is coming in a few weeks- , but we are marrying sooner than we initially planned solely for the insurance reason.

I am a USC but I have only been in and out of the US for the past 8 years. Every time I come back I just go to my State Farm and they have a temporary insurance that is available through Time Life. I believe that Farmer's has something similar. It is usually pretty resonable and you specify the day you want it to begin and end, it takes an entire 20 minutes to sign up. You should be able to do the same thing for your fiance.

Hopefully that helps and you are able to find something.

If you search for traveler health insurance or somthing like that you will find some companies who specialize in insuring non-residents who are in USA. I insured my wife doing that when she cam on a K1 visa for 4 or 5 months and then added her to my insurance after we were married. Phila - you don't have to get married earlier just for insurance - but if that's what you want - do it. My wife never used that health insurance - so one can easily stay uninsured for a few months - depends on your comfort level with being un-insured. Good Luck

When I brought my wife over on her K1, I bought a major medical policy for 90 days for about $240.00. We didn't need to use it. So I have no idea how good it actually is. Now she'll enter on a K3, but insurance isn't an issue anymore. She is now on my employer's medical policy and by the time she enters, the existing conditions exclusionary period will have timed out. (It has already timed out.)

The coverage we got was only for major medical. She had a minor illness while she was here. We went to an Urgicenter and I paid out of pocket.

Are you really that worried something that catastrophic will happen before you marry? You only have 90 days to make it legal. What are the chances she's going to be that ill or get severely injured in that very small amount of time to justify paying an overpriced health insurance premium? I'd play those odds with comfort and just wait until you're both married and eligible for inclusion on your present policy.

What are the chances - well, it seems that the catastrophic always happens when you're not covered. Just ask anyone with a 5,000 dollar medical bill to pay.

Those must be the same people that actually believe they'd have won Publisher's Clearing House Sweepstakes if they would have only returned the entry. laughing.gif

Because you don't does not mean it will! The odds are very slim, in the referenced time frame, someone would suffer an illness or other catastrophic situation costing more than a full coverage health insurance premium for 90 days.

I had no insurance for the EXACT time frame - January 5th to March 12th - and had to have a surgery. So I would never recommend going without insurance.

Of course, the solution to this would just be to get married...
