My husband and I are having our first baby in January. I am about to file for the removal of the conditions of my green card (the "expiration date" is April 2008). The baby's grandmother lives in Poland and would love to come over to see her little grandson during summer of 2008. My question is what do I need to do to bring my mom over here for a month?

I've heard from my friends back in Poland that they have received an invitation from the family members that were living permanently in the States...

Is it still how it works? What time of an invite would it have to be? Something formal and sign by an attorney?

What are the steps?


I am quite certain she will get the tourist visa (although it is pretty damn hard for Polish people) as she is taking care of my underage sister who is also under her custody (my parents got divorced) so there is something that is holding her still in Poland aside from her work and etc.

She can just apply for a visitors visa. I didn't know you had to have a super-duper reason to visit in order to be given one. I thought you just had to apply.

Sounds like there is a good reason, she applies, look up B2 Visa at the appropriate Consuate.

It's not about the reason at all - it's only about the ability to prove non-intent to immigrate.

Yes kitkat is correct. You need to prove that you will return. They would look at the reasons you are visiting as a reason not to go back home.

I am cosidering the same scenario and I am in a similar situation (although I am not pregnant ). My parents will probably just have to apply for a tourist visa and show that there is something they will go back to. When I was coming to the US as a visitor on a tourist visa, I did not have any official invitations, just an email from my friend that I will stay at his place and he will cover my expanses here. I also brought a bunch of documents that showed I have my own money and I am not leaving the country to immigrate because I am poor. Also, I brought a letter for my employer that I have a full time job for an unlimited period of time.
I am not sure based on what they give some people a 1 year visa (me) and a 10 year visa to some others (my sister). Maybe when you give them a definite time when you want to go, as I did, they give you a visa for just one year. My sister did not define in her application when she wanted to go and got one for 10 years (never used it ). It is just my guess though.
