hello guys! i just arrived here in the US 2 weeks ago under k3 visa, and now we're on the process for filling AOS and EAD. Im just curious if i could apply SSN eventough i havent gotten EAD yet? and Someone told me about having A# or (alien number) is ok to apply SSN? i saw from my k3 visa that i have A# (eg. A# 123 456 789) which under annotation - hubby's name and address but i dont know if that's my A# (alien number) they're talkin about. I remember also from AOS form they are askin for A#.. should i put the A# i saw from my passport on the form? yay... i dont know... im confuse.. yelp!!!

Well you can apply but you will be turned away. For a K-3 the answer is no SSN until you have approved EAD

You will need either a EAD or a Greencard to get a SSN.... only K1 visa's get a SSN with a valid I-94....

Many banks will let your hubby add you to an already existing account or open a new one with only one (his) SSN. Some banks will not. Need to check around. Most or almost all will not allow you to open one by your lonesome.

Wow, I didn't know this. But those who emigrate to the U.S. on a K3 can leave the country before receiving their GC, right? I mean, the K3 is a multiple visa, isn't it? Just curious...

As far as I know yes it is. K3 is a multiple visa, and have 2 yrs to adjust status unlike k1

Yes a K-3 is a multiple entry visa good for 2 years good.gif No AP needed!!

sadly not allowed an SSN until I have an approved EAD or GC though sad.gif thats why i desperately need my EAD approved!! 93 days and counting cray5ol.gif

the k1 vs k3 visa is so strange to me. but thanks for clearing that up.
both should have the right to an ssn as soon as they arrive.

Yeah, there's really no rhyme or reason (that I can see) behind why a K1 is work authorised upon entry and K3 is not.

I have the SSA document right in front of me....... K3 visa holders cannot work without an EAD.

this is just my experience...

when my hubby added me to his account, bank personnel asked for my SSN and glad I got it.

I got added to my hubbys bank account without SSN no problem.....the bank personnel photocopied my passport containing my visa/I-94 filled in and signed a W-8. I was issued a debit card with no problems!

Once i have a SSN i just need to inform the bank who then will update my info on hubbys account!

I have heard that some banks wont do this though without an SSN.....before we moved to Nebraska (my hubbys bank in NC) were oblivious to the fact that indeed i could be added to his account w/out one until they actually phoned they "head office and enquired about it" to their embarrassement i was right and they were wrong........i did however receive an apology wink.gif after months of them saying NO its not their policy to add people to checking accounts without SSN's.

If a bank tells you NO they can not add you to your spouse's checking account then theyre mistaken, all they need to do is fill out a W-8.
