Not true. You are legally allowed to work as soon as the EAD is
approved, you don't need to physically have the card on your person to be legally employed. Once the EAD is approved, you can sign an I-9 and you have 90 days in which to show your employers the actual EAD card (it should show up within a few weeks of approval, so this 90 day limit is no problem).
