Ok, we are in the middle of gathering all the evidence and we have a couple of questions: Do we need to send them divorce decrees for prior marriages of either the citizen or the immigrant (unfortunately, we both have one)?
How important are the tax returns? They are not filed jointly, and the numbers for the citizen's income are not very good looking unsure.gif Can we just skip those because they only show we filed as married filing separately and the same address?

Thanks for any input!

Financial records showing joint ownership of assets andjoint responsibility for liabilities, such as joint savings andchecking accounts, joint federal and state tax returns, insurance policies that show the other spouse as thebeneficiary, joint utility bills, joint installments or otherloans.

It doesn't say anything about previous divorces in the instructions.

No you dont have to send divorce papers.... and yes the tax returns or transcripts are very important (why did they file separately) they would have got a better tax break if they had filed jointly...

Thanks for your help, Niagaenola and Gaby&Talbert. We used to file jointly but our accountant advised us to change that since my husband's own business is not doing so well the last couple of years.

What they are looking for is evidence that you have a bonified marriage.

Thanks!
I have another question. We have many cards for different occasions but some of them are written in Bulgarian (from my family). Is there any point of sending copies of those with translations?

I think the evenelopes they came in are more important as they would show your address....

Thanks, MarilynP! We made copies of the envelopes and not the cards then.
