So, clear this up for me - the guy was gay but he gave her his eyes because she loved him? Or did I miss something?

I can see how it gives the impression he is gay but I don't think his orientation is the point. His real love was photography and the beauty he finds in the world. The young woman had a love or "Infatuation" for him and they shared experiences together. The sacrifice came when he gave his eye sight which is crucial for photography. He knows how important eyesight is and possibly he felt guilty for indirectly taking hers.

This reminds me of an arabic video of the singer jogging and he saves another girl he had an infatuation for from being struck by a car and he becomes blind from it.

Let me see if I can find it and post it back here. If not then I would ask my Husband because he'd know what I was looking for.
