So I was thinking this morning about the non-bbq place we got food from last night. You know when you go to a restaurant and have food that is incredibly mediocre and you think hey, I could open up a place next door and sell GOOD food.

This place was busy busy, well at least 3/4 full and I can't understand why.
*Marilyn*
can I get a cup of tea? I don't do coffee...... blech... tongue.gif

Of course Marilyn...here you go! I think Laura is a morning tea drinker as well. You can share this pot.

trailmix, I've always wondered about the same thing. I have pondered this, and the only explanation I can come up with is that a) it's a regional thing...what some people call BBQ, and their specific taste, is unique to that area, hence, if you're not from that area, you can't really appreciate it. or cool.gif one person goes to the restaurant, someone sees that it's open, and goes as well...subequently as others drive by, they go in as well. No one knows how crappy it really is! Now, as time goes by...people go by, see all the cars and think...hmmm, look at all the cars! That must be a good place to eat! And....so....on.... laughing.gif

aww thanks for the tea...

I agree Carla, it probably is that, wow it's busy, must be a good thing!

Well I would think so too Marilyn, except it was just a bbq pork bun - the menu said 'our speciality' - laughing.gif Then again you may be right, this particular thing may be for the non-bbq purist, they did have another pork sandwich 'smothered in bbq sauce'. To my thinking smoked/bbq meat should be good alone, the bbq sauce is just icing on the cake.

Here is another thing - so I order the bbq pork bun and fries, Husband orders the bbq beef dinner platter.

My dinner was $ 3.99 for the sandwich and 99 cents for fries. Husband's dinner platter was $ 11.99. All he got that I didn't get was a little more meat and 2 pieces of inedible garlic bread (no bun). Oh and one of those little plastic things of beans and coleslaw.

What we didn't realize until we were sitting there waiting is that the 'dinner platter' is really an 'eat in' thing as it is all you can eat .

I've noticed that, too. We've eaten at places that are crap and they are always packed. My husband says it's partly to do with the poor unsuspecting tourists keeping their businesses going, and partly to do with the fact that all the seniors eat out and can't tell the difference between good food and crap. whistling.gif

Just read about Trailmix' BBQ experiences yesterday - one thing I have definitely found here in the South is that BBQ means something totally different than it does back home. I think it could indeed be part of the regional differences that you experienced - here the sauce is everything; the meat seems to be secondary.

Joel says the same thing...to him, grilling out is the same as BBQ-ing. Here in the South, BBQ is as regional as the area that it's prepared in. BBQ is so different...county by county. Yeah, the sauce IS the main thing...the meat is definately secondary. Everyone has their own opinion (and quite often are very vocal about it smile.gif ) about what BBQ is best.

Here is a link to some BBQ places here in Georgia, some of which have been around for quite a while. http://www.georgia.org/Travel/BBQ.htm

Zeb Deans BBQ is what I grew up on...and I've had lots of different kinds from all over Georgia. IMHO this is the best biggrin.gif Zeb Dean started his place probably 50 years ago...still going strong...and the recipe for his BBQ sauce is a secret: only family and trusted workers know it.

Zeb's Place
5742 Hwy 29
Danielsville, GA

Zeb's Place neat Danielsville lays claim to some of the best Brunswick Stew in the state. The staff is is always ready to serve you with a side of southern hospitality, and the restaurant's founder, Zeb Dean, is thought of by many as North Georgia's barbeque guru.

Good morning everyone! Yes, Kathryn and Karen, I agree, BBQ here is not BBQ in Canada - it's a Canalien thing. So, for those of you about to enter the U.S. - unless there is smoke coming out of a chimney somewhere - it is not BBQ!

So I ordered the Sunday paper (which is huge btw) to be delivered and it was this morning, big article on the whole mortgage fiasco - interesting and also very hard for those caught up in it.

Since I am having said paper delivered, does that mean I am now a 'real' Florida resident? Oh, which reminds me, krikit, my Husband is thoroughly enjoying making U-turns here good.gif

You got that right. I was most disappointed when my husband took me for BBQ in NC for the first time. Definitely not what I was expecting. blink.gif

I'm on my way to get groceries to bring back to the US with me. The shops are closed tomorrow due to May 2-4. Lots of fireworks going off last night. Probably more tonight. No idea how I am going to fit all my stuff into my suitcases. Might have to leave some things behind and bring them next time. laughing.gif

Yes it is the front page of the Sentinel today. I also find it very interesting to look at all the flyers that come with that paper, the flyer section is HUGE!

I know. My husband loves it. Me... not so much. I let him clip all those coupons. laughing.gif He told me on the phone he was most upset that last Sunday's paper wasn't delivered and now he won't get the flyers. That happens a lot.... that they forget to deliver the paper. Very annoying. If you call before a certain time they'll redeliver. But he was at work last Sunday so he didn't realize until he got home. He was not a happy camper.

Oh look! There's the cat! kicking.gif

Hmmm. Just let the cat out. It's drizzling. Guess I can scratch "walk" off my list. blush.gif

I agree, I find the flyers interesting now, because there are store flyers I have never seen. I have managed to clip out 2 coupons total in the 2 papers we have bought.

In a month or two I will, again, be laying the papers out on the floor and taking a picture and asking why these people are wasting so much paper!!

Hey, we have a Caribou coffee near by. It isn't bad, except that they don't always have a mild or medium blend brewing - just some sort of heavy roast that is far too strong for me. They are a pretty good place to go though - comfy chairs, internet access and a fire place along with lots of coffee and baked goodies. Joe and I often take books and go over there to spend a few hours lounging and enjoying coffee.

So we went to Penney's today - I did get a credit card and 10% off my purchases today, which included a knife and 2 pairs of sunglasses.

Had to buy a knife for slicing, there isn't a sharp knife in this place and it was making it so I didn't even want to cook! Not that I enjoy cooking all that much normally anyway smile.gif
