Hello Everyone,

I am glad to announce I got my CR1 approved and would be traveling to US shortly. However I have a few questions if someone can help me with.

1. My Immigrant Visa reads " Upon endorsement serves as temporary I-551 evidencing PR for 1 year" My question is why is it 1 Year and not 2 years which is generally the case, if I am not mistaken?

2. What happens at the Port of entry? If I have to go to Chicago and I take a connecting flight where I land at JFK first and then move onto Chicago...will my POE be JFK or Chicago?

Thanks in Advance !

Congratulations!!!!

1. The I-551 stamp is something you can use to prove your status in the States until you get your green card mailed to you. The actual card you get in the mail is the 2 year card.

2. Your POE will be JFK. Once you are done with immigration, you can go to the gate of your outgoing flight to Chicago.

I found this in the Colombia Club from a member who came to the US with his wife very recently. The process at the POE is pretty painless in most cases, you have nothing to worry about.

"Hi everybody,

My wife and I entered the USA in Miami, last Friday.

It was a bit of a shock for me as ALL of the US Homeland Security
officers in the POE there spoke English as a second language.

There were US Gov't billboards there promising good service.

Reality was quite different. The service is incredibly slow and the
officers seemed more interested making jokes and ridiculing the
people who mistakenly entered the room, looking for the baggage
dept. (The baggage signs there are very confusing.)

We arrived through customs ok and we went to the POE together.

There room was only 1/4 full of people in the chairs and there were
5 officers on duty, so we figured it would be a breeze. This was
at 1:00pm.

Well, pretty soon there was only one officer processing the cases.

It took all of three hours to process my wife. The place on a busy day
must be a total nightmare.

So plan to spend some time if you need to catch a connecting flight.

Cheers!

George

JK, yes, some people did not get their VISAs, a familily, and some
fiancees, the fiancees were denied because the man was not present,
that is what my wife told me."

This is a bit confusing...does my wife, who is in Chicago now, need to be there with me at the POE for me to get the entry?

No she doesn't need to be there.

That report above seems to be the exception. I landed at Portland and was treated with great courtesy and was through immigration and at the baggage carousel before the bags had got there.

People on this board who have come through JFK do not seem to have an especially long delay. But you could always arrive at a very busy time, so allow plenty of time to get to your onward flight.
