Hey canucks,

Does anyone know offhand if Ontario required infants to be vaccinated with the BCG vaccine during certain years? I can't seem to find anything about it and thought I'd ask here before I start calling up the public health department.

Thanks!

Er, okay, my sister says she thinks it might be smallpox. Anyone here born around 1973 in Ontario with a scar on their upper left shoulder? Public health doesn't have any of my records anymore (which is why I needed to get titre tests done for my medical in Canada) and my parents are no help since they tossed my vaccination records years ago.

here is a list of immunizations you need if you are between the ages of 18 to 64...

1. Combination Vaccine for:

* Tetanus Diphtheria (Td)

An initial series of three immunizations, which are normally received in childhood at ages 2, 4 and 6 months and a booster immunization within the last 10 years must be documented.

or

If you have no proof of a primary series you must begin an adult series of TWO doses of Td 4 to 8 weeks apart with a third dose 6 to 12 months after the second. You must be as up-to-date as possible with your series at the time of your immigration medical.

or

You must have proof of a Td booster within the 4 weeks prior to your immigration medical.

or

An antibody titers blood test showing proof of immunity to tetanus and diphtheria.

2. MMR Combination Vaccine for:

* Mumps
* Measles
* German Measles (Rubella)

If you were born after 1956 you must show proof of immunization for mumps, measles and German measles

or

An antibody titers blood test showing proof of immunity to MMR (mumps/measles/rubella).

or

You must receive an immunization for MMR.

3. Chickenpox (Varicella) -

A verbal declaration of chickenpox.

or

Proof of immunization against chickenpox. Normally two immunizations 4 to 8 weeks apart or the first of the two within the 4 weeks prior to your immigration medical examination.

or

An antibody titers blood test showing proof of immunity to chickenpox (varicella).

4. Hepatitis B (For ages 19 and under.)

5. Influenza (Influenza as of Nov 1, 2003. Age 50 and above.)

That small dime sized scar on your upper arm? It was for smallpox. It was a vaccination that turned into a scab,and the result is that scar. All children at one time in Canada had that. At some point this did stop immunizing for this though, I just don't know when. My kids, in their 20's, never had it.

As a side note misa, I'm going for my AOS interview this month and I'm not going to get a TB skin test. I've never seen more rumour mongering than this issue! I've not seen anything posted on the gov't. website, nor did it say anything about it in my letter from USCIS. They've known about this guy "Speaker" for quite some time, and still haven't issued anything pertaining to the TB skin test being a requirement. Anyway, I'm not going to do it. IF they do say something to me at the interview, I will be saying something to them about where and when this came from, and ask for some type of documentation. I will then pass it on here.

Thanks Carla! You're more helpful than my mom was when I asked her about my vaccinations before my medical in Canada. She said, "How would I remember what you got? I threw out your records a long time ago." blink.gif tongue.gif

Anyway, I wasn't sure if my scar was from smallpox or BCG. Sounds like it was indeed for smallpox. I was going to get a preemptive TB test but was going to hold off if I had indeed had the BCG vaccine since it would come up with a false positive and then I'd be required by the health department to get a chest xray. Which of course I already had before I came on my K3 and another would come up clear.

I hear you about the whole TB skin test AOS confusion for K1s and K3s. My interview is this month as well and my husband convinced me to not bother getting the skin test and just seeing how it goes at the interview.

ok, ignore my post.. I didn't realize you were going through AOS... blush.gif

It's okay Marilyn! Someone else might see the post and get the info they need. smile.gif

You're correct on the false reading Misa. I know all about the TB skin test and what having the vaccination in chilhood does. I had to get the skin test and my immune system showed a false negative reading and was then forced into another x-ray before my 693A would b4 signed by a Civil Surgeon.
My review on this is located on page 4 under the topic titled $176 later. I hope you don't require this test

Allie, yeah, that sucks that you guys had to go through that... for what? The same damn results from the first chest x-ray!

Can you claim any of the $176 on your U.S. health insurance?

Yeah it did suck big time . Doing everything to get here and then more paper work and more medical requirements in order to get a form signed is so redundant.
I got a test that we knew my immune system would react too because I was vaccinated to fight the TB germ and then paid for an X-ray that I knew and the DR. had an idea what the results would read. It's just a circle everyone wants thier kick at us I guess whistling.gif whistling.gif
We didn't think of the U.S.health insurance we have covering what I paid for it all. I have the reciepts and will check into it, thanks Misa
Best of luck when AOS interview arrives

I was thinking the exact same thing. I am up to date with my immunizations and have all the docs.

I am pretty sure they stopped doing that one shot where it left the small round circle on your arm by 1973. I was born in May of '73 and don't have one. I remember when I was little complaining to my mom that everyone in the family had except for me, how come? biggrin.gif

So between '69 and '73, lol yes, I know a long gap...they stopped doing this vacc.

Cheers,
misa
Okay, I got 3 responses from friends and family who all say it's a smallpox vaccine scar. I thought they had eradicated smallpox YEARS ago. I mean like way before I was born. tongue.gif

But yeah, I'm not going to bother with the TB skin test. I'll just keep my fingers crossed that they don't "require" it at my interview since I am adjusting from a K3.
Danette
Just to clear up any confusion....the BCG vaccine is for TB, the smallpox vaccine is something different. If you had the BCG vaccine, your TB skin test has the potential to be positive which would require an xray to confrim the absence of active TB. I am not sure about the Ontario vaccination requirements of the 70's, but as a medical laboratory technology student of the 80's, I required to have a BCG vaccine which produced a nasty dime sized scar that took months to heal and the potential to give a false positive TB skin test. As a K1 applicant, I required a chest x-ray, not a TB skin test, so my BCG vaccine did not affect my medical adversly.
Hope this info helps. It's not often my med lab experience allows me to answer Vj questions biggrin.gif
misa
Yep! smile.gif

I asked about the BCG vaccine because there has been some recent discussion about whether or not K1s and K3s will need a TB skin test at the AOS stage (it's unclear... I guess I'll find out at my interview!). I wasn't sure if my scar was due to a BCG vaccination as a baby. My scars tend to keloid so from memory, it sort of looked like a BCG vaccination scar but bigger (but different than a smallpox vaccination scar). I can't see it anymore since it's been completely tattooed over. tongue.gif But it appears it is from a smallpox vaccination instead.
