Hey guys. I heard this site can be pretty helpful and it has a whole portal for Canadians so of course I had to join.

I'm a Canadian from Kitchener, Ontario who is living in New Jersey. My husband was from NJ so I moved here to be with him. Now I'm just waiting on my AOS application like every one else.

I miss Canada dearly and have not been home in 7 months. blush.gif

Welcome to VJ. smile.gif

I'm still in Canada, and I miss my fiance. But I know that I'll miss Canada once I'm with him permanently. There's a lot of missing happening on this journey.

If you'd like to tell us what you're missing, you'll find lots of people here to commiserate with you.

Hhaha yes I have seen that! Sorry you guys are backlogged but know that while you are back logged, I'm sitting here in the US not being able to work or leave the country! haha. I think we are both in crappy situations! sad.gif

What do I miss about Canada? Mostly my family and friends of course. I miss the geography of the place. When you are used to this spread out landscape and then move to New Jersey suburbs, it is like night and day. I'm a writer ..a CANADIAN writer (haha) and so this move in landscape has really affected my writing psyche as well. I had spent a christmas in new jersey in 2005. There was no snow on the ground. When I got back to Canada afterwards, driving home into my parents neighbourhood, it was night time and there were kids playing pond hockey by these big lights and it was snowing. That was the first time that it truly hit me; that I am part of something bigger than myself and that I am a part of a culture that is really special.

I miss the calm nature of Canadians. I miss our people's patience. People can be very rude here. There have been times that I have really wanted to get out of here and return home because no matter where you go, the attitudes that people have are different. I went to university in Ottawa, Ontario which was such a beautiful city. I walked every where and enjoyed all it had to offer. Now I'm stuck in a town where there is no where to walk! haha Also, it's new jersey so there are a lot of unsafe places where I live.

Of course I miss the stuff that every Canadian misses....Tim hortons, smarties, shreddies, kraft dinner...etc. haha

I never realised how much I would value someone saying "can i have a double double?" haha

Hello and welcome. Glad to see you made it over here to the Canada forum... we're the friendliest bunch around. smile.gif

You guys are definitely friendlier than some other immigration websites/forums I have been on. Some of them I have found the posters to be nasty and holier than thou on immigration issues. I'm looking to talk to people about their experiences, not legal advice so much. I have a lawyer so am not looking for someone to tell me certain things Im doing are incorrect or something.

Welcome to the Canada forum its a great one tongue.gif
I totally understand. I have been here just over a week and i do miss Canada. I have been in HK for a while and when i first moved there i didn't miss home and much as i do now. It was an adventure, and every day was a new day were i would discover or experience something different. Here is similar to Canada but the difference are huge. But the biggest key is not working. I have always worked since i could. I am a preschool teacher and in hk last year I was a supervisor/Coordinator. So I have gone from having pens and files in my purse to dog chews, plastic bags and shopping lists.....lol But i have to say that i do enjoy being back in a country that i can speak the language well and understand what everybody is saying.....lol
thetreble
Yeah not being able to work stinks! I'm competely able bodied and spent lots of money on a university education to get a BA. Right now if feels like a waste. One day soon though I hope to get my EAD so I can start working. Some days I just don't know what to do with myself. I try to fill up my day with stupid things but sometimes it leaves me feeling pretty low. I went from having a full time job, going out with my friends and finishing my degree to...well...not doing any of those things! lol. It's been a hard transition.

It's great I can speak the language, I will agree with that. It must be extremely hard to come to a new country and not speak a word of the language spoken there.

You could spend your days online here in the Canada forum like the rest of us. biggrin.gif

I know you have a lawyer but the best advocate for your case is yourself. Spend the time reading through all the guides so you know what to expect next, and start prepping stuff for your upcoming interview (photos of you and your spouse, getting both your names on rental agreements, utility bills, etc., etc.). Reading up on the AOS process and what others have been through gives you an edge if you feel your lawyer starts to slack on things.

Don't worry, that is what I have been doing for a long time now. While I did say in another thread that I was "new" to this, I meant the specific question on the medical exam. I don't know much about the K-1, K-3, CR-1, etc because I did not go through that process. I spend a few hours a day it seems finding stuff out so that I am prepared. I have already started preparing for my interview (even though I have no clue when its going to be). I've started to get all my proof of a bonafide marriage in order. I do find though that sometimes the more I read, the less I know! I read one thing and then I can read the exact opposite in another thread so I am a bit weary of what I read.

I do like this forum, though. It's the best one out of all the ones I have found. It seems people are out to help you instead of get their panties in a bunch over what you are saying or doing is wrong.

Sigh yes, I agree on this one.

I wish I could go home and visit my family. My grandpa couldn't make it to our wedding, doctors orders - he couldn't fly. I am afraid he is going to pass and I wouldn't be able to see him before he does.

These restrictions can be very taxing, here's hoping the process ends in a good light for us soon.

Welcome to your Canada on the internet. smile.gif

Thanks!
I'm sorry to hear about your grandfather. That is horrible. Not being able to go home and see your family when you need them most is a real awful situation which I wish none of us were going through.

If you ever get overwhelmed with reading up on the immigration process, take a break and come back to it later. It can be sooooo overwhelming at first!

Since you're using a lawyer, are you receiving the letters from USCIS or is your lawyer? If it's your lawyer, make sure you stay on top of them to make sure you don't slip through the cracks.

Misa- I have definetely realized I need to keep bothering my lawyer about what I am getting. When I initially got sent an RFE, I didn't know until the status of my case changed online on July 21st. USCIS said that they had sent out the RFE on July 9th!!! So I got all freaked out as to why I hadn't gotten a notice from them in 2 weeks. It turns out that all my stuff is going to the lawyer as I suppose they filed the G-28. I called my lawyer and she, with no concern, said "oh yes we got it and it's being taken care of. They wanted your long form birth cert." (which I had given to my lawyer after I filed. I knew I was going to get the RFE because I only filed with my little ontario birth cert.)

Any ways...I emailed her yesterday to ask if she had gotten a notice from USCIS that they received my birth cert. She then wrote back to me today that they had only sent it out on the 24th of july!!! So she lied to me when she said they had taken care of it when I called her on the 23rd! She only replied to the RFE a day after I actually phoned her. She said they are really busy as people are trying to get their appl. in before the fee increase but that is noooo excuse! So I will be checking up on her! I'm not going to get effed!

Krikit- laughing.gif Yes I am sure if I give it time, I will be ready to name the jerks by name! haha

How frustrating! "Busy" isn't really an excuse when you are paying them for their services. Definitely check up regularly! smile.gif

I totally agree. Ramos has had some nasty replys when he has been trying to help posters. This is deffinatly a much relaxed forum. I cringe when i have to post in the other forums, as i never know what i am going to get as a reply.
