We tried to add myself on a health plan through my wife's insurance company and they quoted us $450 per month! She does not pay anything for herself, it is covered by her employer.
WTF???????????????
I used to pay $30 monthly for regular health plan through my ex company in Canada.
What have the rest of Canadians done when moved to the US?
Is there anything cheaper around that acctually makes sense to get?

Costs are based on the group of people that make up the plan. Meaning, if you work for a smaller company, or a company with a noticably higher age, then the premiums are higher. The premiums are usually partially covered by your company. The amount they cover can vary greatly from one company to the next. Also, the cost for a single person is really cheap. It jumps quite a bit to go to a couple, more than just double the cost of an individual. I'm not sure why.

We did an catastrophic /emergency policy for inbound immigrant for me for the first few months (we used www.sevencorners.com/ppo until I could find a job that would cover me (inexpensively).

The emergency policy ran about 60$ per month for me. I now pay 30$ per week for health premiums (my insurance is better than my husbands' so his premiums are included in that plan).

It was going to cost 450$/ month if I was added to his policy cause he's is a contractor at his work.. so yeah.. I feel your pain.

450 a month is not bad. Good thing you are young and healthy. Wait till you actually need healtcare, then they will want 2000 a month.

Ouch. In Canada I paid about 100 bucks a month to have Alberta Health care and Blue Cross Plan C.

I'm lucky that I have medical coverage through Mel and his work. I had to go to the Doctor recently- I didn't have to pay for the Doctors visit or the drugs I needed.
