I everybody...

I just moved here from Germany with my husband and even though we've been here for almost half a year I haven't met anybody except his family and his friends crying.gif . I really miss my friends back in germany and I miss having that "girls-talk" with a friend. If you're american or german or polish or whatever... if you life in my area ( elmira, NY)... let me know and maybe we can make friends...

I don' live near Elmira, NY-- sorry. But My fiance will be coming from Germany soon (i hope) and my worst fear is that he will be sad and miss his home after 6 months... like you. So we have discussed several things he can do to keep busy while he gets on his feet, like: Conversational English classes, real estate classes... etc. This way he meets people in school. Are you working? Can you volunteer somewhere? I hope this helps and I am sorry you're homesick sad.gif I also wish we lived closer.

I've no idea where Gillett, PA is hehe but I'm between Lewistown and State College (in Central PA)

Hi...

Thanks for your quick answer... someone actually cares... lol blush.gif

I'm actually working as a volunteer in the hospital here in elmira but ALL the people that I work with are 60 and up years old, I mean there's nothing wrong with that, but I'm more looking for someone around my age. It's a good start though to get to know at least some other ppl than just the 5 family members of my husband good.gif
Right now I can't work yet cause I don't have a work permit yet but I hope it doesn't take too long to get it.

It's gonna be a hard time for both of you when he gets here, maybe not in the first couple of month but after that. I mean, it was the happiest day of my life when I first got here and my husband picked me up at the airport after not being with him for almost 6 month! But I'm sure you can keep him busy for at least a little time innocent.gif lol, and as soon as he starts some classes or something like that he'll find some ppl too.

Hi... Gillett is a very, very little place about 10 miles south of Elmira, NY. So it's on the north border of PA right in the middle

Hallo,
Ich sollte also meine Green Card bald bekommen.
Wenn du willst meld dich doch bei mir um ein paar Erfahrungen auszutauschen und sich einiges von der Seele zu schreiben.
viele Gruesse

I live in FL now but I'm from Albany NY! Not close to Elmira, but that's okay because I don't like Western NY.

Hi SandyCheeks,

Good luck on your immigration journey! Likewise, I'm living in NYS now (the WNY area of NYS) and have been through the immigration situation too. I'm about 2-3 hrs or so away from your area of Elmira, NY.

See and post too in the message thread that I started for NYSers: http://www.visajourney.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=53135 "Anyone here from/living in/moving to NYS". A message thread for all you NYSers (and for anyone else who is interested) to share your thoughts and ideas about this beautiful part of America...

"I NYS!!", do you?

Hi...

Well, can't really say, that I love NYS, I don't even live here, I live in PA and to be honest with you I like it here better than in NY (sorry... blush.gif ), I just thought I'll write Elmira, cause the town we live in in PA is so small and nobody knows it. But thanks for the link I'll check it out.

Hi SandyCheeks,

Sorry that I misunderstood that you lived in NYS. I'm glad that you like where you are in PA. Do you visit NYS often? Do you like visiting NYS? Do you visit Elmira often? Elmira is so close to tne NYS/PA border, that it seems like it's in both states. I remember once when I was driving by at night, and my husband and I stopped in Elmira. I had to ask him "What state are we in now?"...lol. I undersand about being in a small town, as I live in a small town too, and nobody knows where it is either, so like you, I have to name the nearest city, which is quite a distance from where I really am. Do you like living in a small town?

Good luck on your immigraiton journey.

Ant

Hmm... I don't know about that one... When I hear on the news that there is a shooting at least once a week in Elmira I'm pretty happy about living in PA, plus I smoke (shame on me...) and cigaretts are way cheaper in PA than in NY... wink.gif But hey, NY is cool too...

It's ok Ant, no problem. I do like living here in general, I don't really care if it's NY or PA to be honest with you, there is not much difference for me. I go to Elmira very often though since that's the closest place to go shopping. I'm happy living in a small town, it reminds me of my childhood, since I grew up in poland in a very small town. It's a little bit like it was back home, that's a nice feeling, I don't fell different or foreign here and it shows me that we are all the same... all over the world yes.gif

The only place I love in the world, other than (Central) Pennsylvania is Scotland ;P There's so much to see and do, so much history and culture, from the Amish to Gettysburg, the gorgeous mountains and scenic valley's, rivers, lakes, and whoopie pies tongue.gif *sounds like a visitpa.com commercial!* I also like to point out people are so excited to get out of New Jersey, they pay to get back into Pennsylvania teehee!

I live in Philly, but I am originally from upstate PA. Most of my family is still there. Once my honey is here and we're married, we're thinking of eventually moving up there. I am concerned about him being homesick as well, but I think he'll enjoy living upstate. He liked it there when he visited, and said a lot of it reminded him of home. rose.gif
sandy cheeks
@ MGsgirl... I'm pretty sure that you're honey is gonna get homesick, I don't wish it to anybody, cause it really sucks, especially when you are THAT far away from your family. It's not like it's an one houre drive or so... I'm just going through this right now. And to be honest with you, the fact that this place is so much like the one I grew up in doesn't make it better, some times it's even worse... But I'm sure you guys can handle it and that you'll help him to get over it. My husband is a great help for me!!!!! He used to be in the military, he knows how it is to go away from his family. Good luck to you guys.

@Leney... yeah, you do sound like a commercial... lol... but it's cool, cause you're right, that's what I like so much about here too!!!

Hi Sandycheeks,

I'm glad that you like living in PA, and it doesn't matter where you are, as long as you are happy where you are smile.gif. That's good that you go to Elmira to shop, as there are lots of places to shop there. Likewise, I love living in a small town too and will always live in a small town (though I didn't grow up in a small town, and I wish that I had instead of growing up in the big cities). It's nice that living in a small town brings back memories of childhood for you. I agree, people in small towns are a lot nicer, friendlier, and make you feel at home, no matter where you're from before. "Everyone knows everyone, and everyone is the same" in a small town. Small town=home smile.gif.

Visa4habibi!
I'm actually in Philly too but I wasn't born here, so I know a lot about being home sick and all that 'good stuff'. I have no idea how far you're from here but I know that I haven't managed to meet someone from Central Philly because of my crazy schedule yet. Good luck!
