Hi,
We went to the Federal building to have my SSN card changed to my married name last week, 2 weeks before my visa expiration, but the woman at the window said she couldn't change it cause the computer wouldn't let her do it anymore I needed to report it to the Immigration and Naturalization Services because my visa would be expired on the 2nd of August, we tried and tried to call the number they gave us for the local INS office but nobody answers, now if I can't have it changed before August 2 what will be the consequences, do I have to wait for my green card so I could have it changed? But what if I get my EAD and my SSN card is still on my maiden name and I find a job will it be a problem? Or I really need to push it and call the INS within this week at least before August and I can still have it changed? Is there any number I could call like an 800 number to report my circumstances for me to be able to get it done still without having to wait for my green card?

Thanks a lot again.

Note: the K-1 expires the moment you use it, it was voided at the POE. The I-94 is what is now coming close to expiring. SSA cannot issue or make changes to the SSN within the last 2 weeks of the expiration of the I-94.

You cannot make changes to SSN card until you either have EAD card, or Green-Card in hand, and again have to wait at least 2 weeks after getting EAD or Green-Card for USCIS to update the database that SSA uses to confirm.

Dont worry about the SSN card, many dont even have one until after getting EAD or Green-card.

SSN card is not used as a form of ID, that is what you use your passport for. I as an American citizen don't even carry that card.

Having the maiden name on that card wont be a problem, besides you cannot be hired until you have EAD.

Thanks YuAndDan,

ok, so i don't have to worry about it it's not really a big deal, and I have to wait for my EAD anyway. i thought i will have to suffer some consequences. . and yeah you're right, it's the I-94 that I meant thanks for correcting. thanks so much.

No worries, just wait for EAD or green card to get the change done to the SSN card.
