Ja ja ja I finally got the SSN in the mail

Congratulations on your social security number! I have a quick question for you: did you check off the box on the DS-230 to get a social security number? If so, did you tell them that when you went to the social security office, or did you just reapply for a new one since you hadn't yet received one?

Hi Mary, good to see you again. How is life in the States? Daniel likes it here?
Yes I did check the box on DS-230 a number to be assigned to me but after 4 weeks (they said at the Embassy in 3 weeks I suppose to get my SSN card) in the States I didn't get it so I went to the local Office and I applied for one. All I needed it was my passport with the visa. I told them that I applied for one during my visa process and the lady asked for my application receipt ....and you know they do not give you one at the Embassy. She checked in the system and I was not there so she let me apply for a number. I hope that I will not end up with another SSN, if I do that i go and return the other one .

Hi Adriana,
Life is good in the States so far, and I think Daniel's pretty happy here. We've been pretty busy since we've been back, as we're having a larger wedding reception here on the 28th...and it's been hectic getting everything ready for that. We've also had some friends from Germany in town, and now Daniel's parents are here for three weeks. (We're headed to Boston today with them to do some sightseeing. )

Thanks for your message back. Your experience was very helpful, as we just returned from the Social Security Office this morning and Daniel was successfully able to apply for a number. They could see from the system that he hadn't yet been issued one. We just hope it will come fast, as we'll be moving to Vermont on August 1st and we'd really like to have it before then. If not, then my parents will just have to send it to us later on.

Glad you got that taken care of, I'm just going through the same process...checked the DS230 box - no SSN. I called the office and they said that process barely ever works and that I'd have to go into an office to apply in person - so I've done that and am waiting for it to arrive. The application letter says it has to go to DHS for review and it could take up to 4 weeks...nothing can be quick or easy.
