As a K-1 you are a legal alien allowed to work as long as you are within 90 days of your US entry.

Nope, K1 are Employment Authorized, but only as long as your I-94.

We applied for SSN after marriage and got card in married name no problem, but some have problems with SSA over this so maiden name tends to be better to avoid issues.

K-1 is considered work authorized so answer Legal alien allowed to work.

There is a guide covering SSA http://www.visajourney.com/forums/index.ph...om&page=ssn

If want to apply in your married name and have a problem send a message to SSA:

http://www.ssa.gov/feedback/

List the office you went to (city, state and street), that you are a K-1 and your phone number.

I decided to take the chance and apply in my married name, everything went fine, card being sent in the next 2 weeks.

After Claudeth had been here for two weeks I took her to the Social Security office and she received her card in the mail a week later.

After we were married we tried to change the name on the card but they wouldn't do it without something official from the USCIS so when her EAD arrived we changed it. That card took about six weeks to arrive.

Good luck good.gif

Is it really possible to get a SSN number before I have recieved my EAD or GC?

No, you must be employment authorized. If you arrived on a K-1 you must still have 14 days remaining on you original authorized stay indicated on the I-94.

Not anymore, for you, sadly. sad.gif

A K-1 visa holder can get an SSN prior to about day 75 (I forget the 'exact' cutoff point) after their arrival in the US - but if their I-94 is about to expire, the SSA won't let them apply. As your I-94 will have long since expired... yep, you'll need your EAD or green card in order to get an SSN.
