Hi, I want to be with my American girlfriend but must leave the US. We do plan to marry but would like to live together for a bit first. It is also my ambition to teach abroard, possibly in Latin America, for 6 months or a year. So, what i'd love is for both of us to move to a new country and work as English teachers. We could then get married and adjust our status using DCF. This seems like a really romantic option. Going away together, getting married, and then returning to the US afterwards. I know that different countries have different rules, but does anyone think this is possible?

Yes,

Many US Consulates have different residency rules for how long a US Citizen has to be considered to be resident of the foreign country before they will consider DCF filing.

The US Citizen MUST maintain domicile in the USA while living abroad, as well as file IRS returns while abroad, this is a major stumbling block for those who do try filing DCF.

Well this does sound slightly promising. We haven't decided where we want to live yet. The decision will definitely be affected the ease with which we can DCF. We do want to teach and live together, but the most important thing is getting married and being together while things are processed. Does anyone have any ideas of countries/cities where DCF is easier? I'm thinking Latin America or China/Thailand. Somewhere where we can both get teaching jobs.

DCF is the easiest in Japan, China is not too bad, but you need residency in China which can be tricky to get.

Perhaps a bit snooping around the DCF forum can get you some answers.

A visa that allows you to work and teach English officially in China is sufficient for DCF.
