i just sent in our petition (july 6,2007) i know it usually takes almost a month for it to be opened.. but how can i check the status of our case?? is there a number the USCIS give us??

Just wait for your check to be cashed......................you did send a check, right?
On the back of the check will be your filing number (?), with that you can register at the USCIS site and monitor the progress, or lack of progress of your petition.

As SqdnGuns said, if you sent a check then the receipt number will be on the back for you to check the progress of the case online. You should also get an NOA1 from the USCIS, although there are a few of us who didn't get one back through the post. If you haven't heard anything back from them in about 4 weeks time, give them a call and tell them that you haven't had any information back. They are really nice at the call center and are only too happy to help.
Until you get either the NOA1, check returned or call in about 4 weeks time, there is no way you can check the progress, so far as I know.

thank you very much... would it matter.... cuz the check i write.. the physical check does not return to me.. at least with any of the checks ive written... i just get a bank statement that the check i wrote has been cashed.. how

You can call your bank's customer service center and they can send you a copy of the cleared check (if it has cleared).

With online banking, I am able to see a scanned image of the check once it has been processed.

thanks... i mailed our petition july 6,2007... and i asked for a return receipt... USPS emailed me that the USCIS has received it but then i havent gotten the return receipt back.... hmmmm ?? arent they supposed to sign it when they get the package then USPS sends me my return receipt or do i have to go to the post office to pick up the return receipt??
