Full Version: airport metal detectors vs jail metal detectors

My mom went to help with some activity in a jail and the metal detector was set off by the bra fasteners, and a paperclip in her boyfriend's pocket. Why aren't airport metal detectors like that? They more concerned someone will bring something into jail than they are about someone bringing something onto an airplane or into an airport?

Metal detectors can be adjusted according to the level of sensitivity the agency wants. For example, when I go through the local court house security, my belt does not create and alert. However, at the airport, it sets the alert off every time. When we have a very high profile case at the court house, the sensitivity level is increased and any type of metal sets the alerts off. Hope this explains it for you.

i used to have a piercing in a..well, non visible place...and when i went to the airport in mexico it set the detector off (and it never did before that). i told the woman what it was, and she then made me go in another room and show her! blush.gif i took it out pretty soon after that! lol

No offense to you BT but this thread probably belongs in Off-Topic.

That's what I was thinking. good.gif

ps. Hi Mk, how are ya?

I often wondered about this too. On my last 2 trips to Egypt I would see a lot of people off to the side being scanned because they set off the detector somehow. I see women giggling because their underwire bras set them off and they were, well....FLAT!!! I'm thinking.....oh God....here I am with these big things with the underwire, I have lots of piercings, plus I have 12 screws and 2 plates in my ankle and my doctor even gave me a card to show security because he said I would set of the detectors! Nope....I set nothing off. Made me wonder what I would have to do to make them go off.

Off topic forum maybe? But it touches on travel, which we do to visit SO's, same as people dealing with any other region. I figured someone here would have an answer, which is what I wanted.

K1? No

Moving Here and your new life in america? Ummm....maybe? But not exactly.

I post on MENA most often, so knee jerk reaction of posting this here too...if it should be in another forum then someone who can move topics can move this one where it belongs.

Actually I think it's more "off topic".

I'm good MK. Thanks for asking!

Fine, fine. Off Topic then. My flight experience is all getting to Morocco (MENA country) and back. I think ultimately that's why it didn't occur to me to put it somewhere else. At the time it was all connected in my head with MENA, so I came to this board. Also, when I go to the off topic board, I see more fun type stuff and general rants and less on less on visa tools like airplanes and airports. It seemed fine when I started it. What I should have done was mention this in the other topic I started today about the yellow card at the Rabat airport. Or put it in the sunday thread, since that sometimes has random thoughts people had. It belongs here in another thread as a lesser question. Do you think I can travel back in time or something?

Hehe, here we are making such a mountain over it. Now you have me started! I hope enough has been said about being in the wrong forum and this won't be totally derailed. I was just curious about metal detectors, why the ones for jail are stronger, when the ones at airports are for national/international security.

If it gets moved it gets moved. Now if there is anything else to be said on the original topic in this thread, it would be better if this stays on topic. If it gets moved to OFF Topic they don't need to hear multiple posts about "no BT, wrong wrong wrong! Bad girl!"

I'm not randomly starting a topic about birthwatching in Virginia or some random sensational news article about something in the US about someone doing something shady, or my recent riding lesson and all the lightbulb moments I had. I assure you if it was something so unrelated to immigration as those topics, that I certainly would not post about it on this board, in its own thread. There is no relation between those topics and the visa process or things required of us generally, like visiting our SO at least 1x in the last two years, which frequently involves FLYING which requires airports. And metal detectors. Can you at least see what I was thinking? Can you trace it? Eh, if not, it wouldn't be the first time. My thinking jumps some steps occassionally.

If I show respect for other people's way of expressing themselves, then I expect the same respect for my thought processes. Don't go there.

i dont see MENA as a place to only post MENA. This is the forum I always post in. I don't post in the other forums. So I guess they will get me next for that. OH WELL!!!! Don't really care. When it they get moved, its MENA people who answer, so what's the difference? Just a matter of who wants what, when and where. Don't let it bother u.

Oh my goodness, BT -- I am not "disrespecting your thought process" or your "way of expressing" yourself or "making such a mountain" out of anything. For crying out loud, I wrote ONE sentence !

All I was saying is -- this topic doesn't seem to have anything to do with ME/NA. My comment was not meant in any way to be personally demeaning to you. Please take a deep breath and read it again. And you might also take a look at some of the other topics that have been moved. You will see that it's nothing personal, just housekeeping.

Hehe....

Take what I was saying with a tiny grain of salt. I was thinking about the mention of this being off topic and my head started going off in ALLLLLL directions, remembering this and that and other things (nothing said by anyone in this topic) and off I went on my own personal tangent, but of course no one knew what was going on.

I wasn't annoyed at you wom, wasn't really talking about anyone who responded. One thing led to another in my head and I think I was venting about other things. I was thinking about when people actually do say offensive things and if I said things I'd like to say, if I wrote strongly like I did the other day, they would just come back at me and things would go down hill and so I stay out of it. Too much drama. But I was thinking about it and I went off. About other things to. So basically you got caught in the crossfire. I was also really tired. Waiting for the fiance to get here I don't really want to go to sleep, even when I know I'm tired, so my hours are rather odd... Ummm....I feel better now after saying what I did before, but not looking to snap at anyone.

Anyway. Metal detectors. At an airport we go thru all these checks and they look out for people with bombs, we can't even bring a can of soda or a bottle of water, no liquid in carry-on over a certain size. But I guess they can't be seriously worried if jail metal detectors are set so much higher. I mean, the underwire in a bra might be disguising one of those strangle cord things, but I suppose they aren't worried about that since they let ya put the bra back on after you get thru the security. Still, how sensitive do they need to be to find a gun or a knife or something of this nature? Why so much more worried about jails that they would make those soooooooo sensitive? Maybe because fewer people enter any given jail on one day, compared to numbers going thru airports, so jails can afford to use more sensitive equipment - how annoying would that be if the airport ones went off for anyone carrying a paper clip or something. Buttons and zippers could make it go off. Big mess. It would take much longer for everyone to go thru security, maybe have to pay more workers. When I focus on the jail metal detector, that part is definitly Off Topic.
