hey brits

I'll soon be making plans to move to states on my immigration visa. I wonder what happens at the port of entry.

what sort of documents you have to present and fill at POE?
What document do u get obtain from officials at POE?
How do you get green card and SSN?
How long it takes to get green card and SSN?

I'd be grateful for the help.

Regards

POE ~ You're given a brown envelope from the embassy, you present that, your I-94 (which you fill in on the plane) and your passport. POE will take the envelope, stamp your I-94 and passport and you can go on your merry little way. tongue.gif

To get your GC you need to apply for AOS. Check out the AOS forum and guides here on VJ and then, if you still can't find any answers, please feel free to post a question.

There is also a forum here that deals with SSN/AP/EAD questions, again, have a read through the guides and post a question if you cannot find the appropriate answers.

What type of visa? You will have to supply more information to get an accurate answer. All other responses have made assumptions so far.

Mags

Thanks for pointing me to this forum. I will be moving to USA on family (spouse) based immigration. Do I still have to go through AOS. My understanding is that AOS is for fiance sort of visa.

hey thanks for answering.

i guess im lost in terminologies. ok here goes

my wife applied for I-130 petition for me
I applied for immigration visa using form DS-230

my understanding is that I'll be an LPR i.e. green card holder upon entering USA. (please correct me if I am wrong).
If I am right, how do i get green card? is it going to be handed in to me on airport or will it arrive in post? or do I have to lodge a separate bloody application for that.

That's what I was thinking.

At the POE you will get a stamp in your passport for temporary proof that you are a permanent resident. The actual permanent resident card will be send within about 30 days. AOS is not required for you.

You'll get quicker and more responses to general questions if you ask them in a general forum rather than keeping them in a regional forum. Had you asked this same question in the CR1/IR1 forum, you would have had a quicker, more accurate response.

It is also important that you fill in your information as well, if you had of done, my answer to your question would have been more appropriate. wink.gif

We are happy to help here, but we DO need some basic information to enable us to give the correct info! Seeing as this is a CR1 question, I'm going to move it to that forum.

You can always ask for the missing information rather than making the assumption. Assumptions often lead to misinformation here.
