I agree totally about not discussing Politics if you are not on the same side.........

I also agree with taking your shoes off when you come inside.

Good good this is the kind of stuff I need to know biggrin.gif

I'm chatting with her right now and I pointed her to the post and she also laughed outloud.

I supposedly have 4 days left on this oil rig in the middle of the ocean here in Brazil and she is finishing up her last work day in Hong Kong today.

These last few days are driving us mad, we just want to be together!!!

So I figured this post would be a good way to help us ALL laugh together and help pass the time.

Got one for you, just saw it while in Montreal. American tourist going to pay for shuttle bus ticket. American male to ticket counter guy "what do you prefer US money or Canadian Money?" Buddy, your in another country use that countries currency... american money isn't superior and a great novelty to us that we are dying to get it. Ticket counter guy's reply...."it doesn't matter they are worth the same amount"

1. I echo the "shoes" issue. And if for some reason you forget to take your shoes off, DO NOT, under any circumstances put your feet on the coffee table or couch wearing shoes!

2. Tell her how much you think Canada rocks better than the rest of the world. biggrin.gif

Oh man. This, this, and this. Not taking your shoes off is the height of rudeness in Canada. It would be like someone waltzing in and taking off their pants and heaping them on the furniture, and then scratching their balls in front of you and your guests.

Lesse what else... wait, I know. Do. No. Do. Everthing He Does unless you want your wife to break out that 'Canadian Rage' (wait, we have Canadian Rage?) and take you out Hockey Night In Canada style.

Don't insult Poutine as being gross whilst praising Pork Rinds and Sausage Gravy.

Erm. Did she go to University? Up here, University and College are two entirely different things. You risk offending a university grad by implying they went to a college. You go to university to become an engineer, you go to college to become a welder. No offense to welders, of course.

My fiance has piped in "Never say Canada is the 51st State". Er, yeah.

And lastly, don't make fun of her accent. Not all Canadian use 'eh' as every second word, and it's insulting to insist as much. I know it might be hard to resist (at least it seems to be for most!) wink.gif

I'm sure she'll bring you up short if you err anyway, so not to worry. good.gif
MissStacey
Even before we were married, Mel put a Canadian flag outside the house, next to the American one. That was sweet smile.gif

Some of his friends made some stupid comments- I let some Canadian rage come out and they shut up about it in a hurry devil.gif

I totally agree with the comments on university versus college. When my daughter and I first came here, we couldn't figure out why Americans call both university and college, "college". It's absolutely true that Canadians would be offended if you asked if they went to "college" when they actually went to a university. In Canada.... University is university, and college is college.

I personally wouldn't find it offensive, especially now that I know that "college" is the term for both types of school in the US. But offense might be taken the other way. According to my fiance, referring to yourself as a university student or saying that you have a university degree is considered pretentious in the US. You might attend the University of Something, but you're going to college, and you're a college student.

QUOTE
My fiance has piped in "Never say Canada is the 51st State". Er, yeah.

"But it's Canada! It's just like the US." tongue.gif My observation is that Americans tend to think that Canadians are just like them, while Canadians tend to think that Americans are similar in some ways but different. Like people from most countries, we Canadians are proud of our culture. We don't like to be perceived as "just like the US" any more than Swiss people like to be seen as German, or vice versa. We can appreciate and like other countries and cultures, but we are who we are. smile.gif

1. Take yer shoes off.

3. Poutine is yummy. Just nod even if you don't think it's true, and don't say it's gross - we get mad and then that legendary Canadian rage comes spilling out. biggrin.gif

4. Don't say that Canada is part of America. Don't make fun of our monarchy either biggrin.gif

5. The igloos and huskies are from the Arctic, and it's not "wow it must be bitter cold up there eh?"

6. Us Canadians don't have a "cute accent" and not all of us say "eh" or "aboot".

7. Don't ask her if she knows Hank or Jenny from Canada.

And don't assume that their from Canada they like/watch/or even care about hockey. Some of us have always despised the sport. So talking about teams, players and anything hockey to a Canadian who can't stand hockey can be quite irritating...

Despite, what warlord said, DON'T EVER say that hockey sucks!! Whether an individual likes the sport or not is pointless, it is still our national sport!

I didn't realize that the kettle thing was American. I brought my kettle cause Joe said he didn't have one. It died shortly after I got here and it was a real hassle trying to find another electric kettle. I actually found one at a garage sale - it had never been used!

Just coming into this thread to say that a) I love it, and I'm not even Canadian, and cool.gif I have had that very same kettle experience! My now-husband bought me a kettle last summer (bless 'im), and was absolutely AMAZED by it, for some reason.
