I'll be browsing around the forums, click on something... and suddenly I'm logged out. It's happened a few times today... is it just me, or is anyone else having the same problem?
(edited to add that the 'something' I'm clicking on has not at any point been 'log out', before anyone says it!)

Not on dialup, and my IP shouldn't be changing, as far as I know... I have had a similar problem (briefly) months ago, when I was still living in the UK. Maybe the IP is changing for some mysterious reason best known to my internet provider...

Let me know if this continues more than a day or so. Could be your ISP making some changes on their network.

I am still having problems- it has been happening since I got back to the US and am using my husbands computer- I didn't have a problem on my computer back home- If I hit add reply or try to use the quote/reply botton, I get knocked off. If I use fast reply, it is fine and I can post.

Sounds like the same problem (or very similar) to the one I'm having, Stacey... I just tried to reply to you quoting your post, but got kicked out. It's worse today - I've only been up for about an hour and a half, and have already been signed out about 10 times.

We use stronghold cookied to protect your account. If your location changes while you are on the site then this can happen. Frequent causes are if your ISP's proxy server changes. What ISP's do you have?

My ISP... hmm, it's a local broadband/cable/satellite provider (sorry, I am extremely clueless about this stuff)... maybe they're messing with something that would cause the IP to change.
After constantly getting signed out all morning, it's been better the last hour or so... so fingers crossed it will stay that way. Oh, and thank you, Captain!

Go here:
http://www.whatismyipaddress.com/and tell me if it changes at all through out the day. Make sure you look at the entire message (not just the big IP address). Example:
Proxy Server IP address: xxx.xx.xxx.xxx
Proxy Server Details: x.x test.com:8080 (proxy computer software)
Proxy Reports IP as: xxx.xx.xxx.xxx
I need to see if any of that changes

The problems I have had are now fixed!!
A few people had mentioned Mozilla Firefox to me- I downloaded it last week.
What I didn't realize I had to do was- instead of pushing internet explorer to get online, I have to push the mozilla firefox symbol. I am doing that now to get online and I am having no problems.

Sorry for being missing in action all weekend - anyway, screenshot coming your way any minute now, Captain! (Thank you!)

The logging-out has happened a couple of times today (not for a couple of hours, though - maybe it's back to normal...?), and a few times over the weekend, too (I was only on very briefly, but had to sign back in after a bit of clicking about). As for Firefox... that's what I'm using, only on a Mac. Don't know if that makes any difference at all...
(Oh! BTW, the IP address that's showing is exactly the same as it has been since I first clicked on that link to the IP-finding site... but not sure about the proxy thing, as I still can't see that info anywhere!)
Thanks again, Captain E.

There certainly have been a few that it affected over certain periods of time. But it seemed to just correct itself eventually, without there being any conclusions drawn into the cause.

Hmm, that's a thought. Cheers, Mags (& MrMags!)... I'm using Firefox, but use Safari for just about everything else (when I first joined VJ, my Safari was playing up & would crash every time I hit the back button on here... so I started using Firefox for VJ, and have been doing so ever since, for some reason!!), so will give it a go and see if it behaves any better. It's not been so bad the last hour or so... only a couple of log-outs, rather than every time I try to do anything! Which is progress, I think!

We do have some security turned on to prevent hijacking member accounts. In some cases if a persons ISP checges their proxy server dynamically it can make this happen. I can try to turn this off for a day to see what happens. I will try it Friday perhaps so we can have a complete day?

Funny this should get bumped today - I was meaning to post again and say that since I switched to Safari, VJ has been behaving (almost) impeccably. I say 'almost' because while I'm not getting logged out, I do occasionally have to shut down the browser (about 3 times a day) because I will suddenly start getting some error message every time I try to open a thread (any thread, makes no difference) saying something about 'bad server response'. Doesn't happen on any other site (and like I said before, I use Safari for EVERYTHING other than, until the other week, VJ, so), so.... hmm. No idea what that's all about. When I quit Safari and restart it, it'll all work fine again (no login required, either!)
