I'll be browsing around the forums, click on something... and suddenly I'm logged out. It's happened a few times today... is it just me, or is anyone else having the same problem?

(edited to add that the 'something' I'm clicking on has not at any point been 'log out', before anyone says it!)
Captain Ewok
Are you on dial-up or is your IP changing? Also have you ever had this problem before?

Not on dialup, and my IP shouldn't be changing, as far as I know... I have had a similar problem (briefly) months ago, when I was still living in the UK. Maybe the IP is changing for some mysterious reason best known to my internet provider... unsure.gif

(Oh, and thanks for replying so quickly! smile.gif )
Captain Ewok
Let me know if this continues more than a day or so. Could be your ISP making some changes on their network. smile.gif

Cheers, Captain! It's not happened for about half an hour, so fingers crossed it's all back to normal now... will let you know if not! smile.gif
eric&gen
im glad im not the only one who has the same problem.
MissStacey
I am still having problems- it has been happening since I got back to the US and am using my husbands computer- I didn't have a problem on my computer back home- If I hit add reply or try to use the quote/reply botton, I get knocked off. If I use fast reply, it is fine and I can post.
featherB
Sounds like the same problem (or very similar) to the one I'm having, Stacey... I just tried to reply to you quoting your post, but got kicked out. It's worse today - I've only been up for about an hour and a half, and have already been signed out about 10 times. huh.gif
featherB
Still happening constantly, over and over again. Just thinking... if it's an IP issue, wouldn't the same thing be happening to other sites/forums I use? It's not... helpsmilie.gif
MissStacey
Do you get that Microsoft message saying "error, blah, blah" with the send/don't send buttons?

Hrrmmm... not seen that one, but then I probably wouldn't, 'cos I'm using a Mac. Sounds like a pain in the arse, though.
Captain Ewok
We use stronghold cookied to protect your account. If your location changes while you are on the site then this can happen. Frequent causes are if your ISP's proxy server changes. What ISP's do you have?

My ISP... hmm, it's a local broadband/cable/satellite provider (sorry, I am extremely clueless about this stuff)... maybe they're messing with something that would cause the IP to change.

After constantly getting signed out all morning, it's been better the last hour or so... so fingers crossed it will stay that way. Oh, and thank you, Captain! smile.gif
Captain Ewok
Of course. I am very willing to help. Hopefully we can gather inough information to make some improvements! smile.gif
featherB
Oops, I spoke too soon - it just happened twice in the last five minutes! Hmm... wonder if there's any way I can stop my IP changing... yes, as you might've guessed, I have no idea what I'm talking about! blush.gif
featherB
Ok... it's now happening over and over and over and over and over again - about 20 times in the last few minutes. Every time I hit the 'reply' button to quote/reply to a post - I was just testing it out, and EVERY time I do that, I'm instantly logged out. Hmmmmmm.... curiouser and curiouser! Sounds like the same problem Stacey's having, maybe...?

(hmm... just hit the reply/quote button on this one, and it seems to be working ok... but not the 6+ times I tried to reply to another post just now! Weird...)

Go here:

http://www.whatismyipaddress.com/

and tell me if it changes at all through out the day. Make sure you look at the entire message (not just the big IP address). Example:

Proxy Server IP address: xxx.xx.xxx.xxx
Proxy Server Details: x.x test.com:8080 (proxy computer software)

Proxy Reports IP as: xxx.xx.xxx.xxx

I need to see if any of that changes smile.gif.

Thank you, Captain! I'll keep an eye on it (particularly each and every time I get signed out!) and let you know my findings. Thanks loads for taking the trouble to investigate the mysterious logging-out thing. smile.gif

Hmm... it's only showing me what my IP is, then underneath that it says 'now detects many proxy servers' - but isn't showing any other info. Am I being really dim and looking in the wrong place?!

can you possibly copy the text and PM me it or send me a screen shot to admin at visajourney dot com?

All day I was constantly needing to re log on. I'm on Long Island, NY with cablevision. This is the first time/day it has ever happpened. Even though the box is checked to keep me looged on - not a public computer. I didn't change any setting or anything. I didn't look into the ISP thing - I'm tired and going to sleep.
MissStacey
The problems I have had are now fixed!!

A few people had mentioned Mozilla Firefox to me- I downloaded it last week.

What I didn't realize I had to do was- instead of pushing internet explorer to get online, I have to push the mozilla firefox symbol. I am doing that now to get online and I am having no problems.
Captain Ewok
How interesting. I should start recommending it publically on the site!
featherB
Sorry for being missing in action all weekend - anyway, screenshot coming your way any minute now, Captain! (Thank you!) smile.gif

The logging-out has happened a couple of times today (not for a couple of hours, though - maybe it's back to normal...?), and a few times over the weekend, too (I was only on very briefly, but had to sign back in after a bit of clicking about). As for Firefox... that's what I'm using, only on a Mac. Don't know if that makes any difference at all...

(Oh! BTW, the IP address that's showing is exactly the same as it has been since I first clicked on that link to the IP-finding site... but not sure about the proxy thing, as I still can't see that info anywhere!)

Thanks again, Captain E. smile.gif

Logged out about 10 times (more, probably) in the last half hour. Every time I try to reply/quote, mostly. I can reply to things if I just hit the 'reply' at the very bottom of the page (ie with no quote) - at least that way I can post the reply, but seems like with my next click after that, I'm logged out again! sad.gif

try a hard reboot on your mac.

I'm using Safari & I'm fine.

There certainly have been a few that it affected over certain periods of time. But it seemed to just correct itself eventually, without there being any conclusions drawn into the cause.

Feather does seem to be experiencing it more than anyone, however.
featherB
It's driving me insane... logged out over and over and over again this morning - sometimes as soon as I log in, I'm logged out again! It's now happening whenever I view someone's profile as well as when I try to respond to a post... don't hold out much hope of this reply posting, it just took me 5 attempts to reply to another post. Very strange... Have rebooted (cheers, Dev! smile.gif ), but that doesn't seem to have achieved much!

Wish I knew whether it was something I could fix, or if VJ just hates me right now! blush.gif Oh, and yep, Mags, it is utterly, utterly infuriating... I did try to reply to your post (& Devilette's) with the quote thingy, but... nothing doing!)

My hubby says he thinks it could be your browser. If you're using Safari, try downloading Firefox. Vice versa if you're using Firefox, try using Safari instead.

If it turns out it isn't your browser, at least you can tick that off your list of possibles. wink.gif

Hmm, that's a thought. Cheers, Mags (& MrMags!)... I'm using Firefox, but use Safari for just about everything else (when I first joined VJ, my Safari was playing up & would crash every time I hit the back button on here... so I started using Firefox for VJ, and have been doing so ever since, for some reason!!), so will give it a go and see if it behaves any better. It's not been so bad the last hour or so... only a couple of log-outs, rather than every time I try to do anything! Which is progress, I think! smile.gif
Captain Ewok
We do have some security turned on to prevent hijacking member accounts. In some cases if a persons ISP checges their proxy server dynamically it can make this happen. I can try to turn this off for a day to see what happens. I will try it Friday perhaps so we can have a complete day?

Glad to report that since I've switched to Safari this afternoon, it actually seems to be working fine... no log-outs at all! Shall I see how it goes (assuming nobody else is having such persistent log-out problems...) for a bit? Wouldn't want security things being switched off unnecessarily!!

But thank you, Captain (and everyone else!) for putting up with all my complaining... am hoping the switch to Safari does the trick! Didn't occur to me that it could be anything to do with Firefox... blush.gif

Sorry to answer this so much later, but is this the reason why when I change computers I have to re-log in to VJ? I have a tendency to do this often as I have so many devices to read VJ these days.

Funny this should get bumped today - I was meaning to post again and say that since I switched to Safari, VJ has been behaving (almost) impeccably. I say 'almost' because while I'm not getting logged out, I do occasionally have to shut down the browser (about 3 times a day) because I will suddenly start getting some error message every time I try to open a thread (any thread, makes no difference) saying something about 'bad server response'. Doesn't happen on any other site (and like I said before, I use Safari for EVERYTHING other than, until the other week, VJ, so), so.... hmm. No idea what that's all about. When I quit Safari and restart it, it'll all work fine again (no login required, either!) unsure.gif

Hmm, might move onto that one next (then again, Firefox seems to want me to instal some updates today, maybe they'll 'fix' it and I can try that again...) - I did start using Camino for a while last year when Safari was playing up, but it was really slow, so I got sick of it pretty quickly. If Safari AND Firefox keep misbehaving, I might give Camino another go! smile.gif

I don't personally find Camino slow. What sort of Mac are you using? It works great on my 1Ghz 12" Powerbook, which is not the fastest Mac ever (I have 4 faster!).

A 1.5 Ghz 12 Powerbook! smile.gif Maybe I should give Camino another try, then... I only used it for maybe a week (last summer, I think it was) and everything seemed to take forever to load. I was surprised, as I'd read plenty of good things about it...

I'm Steve Job's whore. I basically have right now: 3 iPods, an iPhone, a Powerbook, an iBook, a Mac mini, a G5 Power Mac and a MacBook Pro (OK so the last 2 were bought for me by work and the iBook is my wife's but I bought it for her). I've also been responsible for converting my work into Macs, hence facilitating the purchase of about 10 Macs so far and one XServe. wink.gif
