Just a note. You can now report & praise members. Regarding the Report Feature, the key difference is this: Reporting a post will send a message to the admin regarding the post and will allow you to give an explaination (you can write a message to the admin about the post); Reporting a member is an automated process that simply documents in a database that someone 'reported' that member (the admin will recieve no immediate notice).

The goal of the new member reporting portion of the function is to get feedback from members anonymously to help us find trolls and other problems. If we see a member getting lots of reports we can take a look at them. If you report a member do not bother reporting them a second time within two weeks as we screen for that (the report will not add anything to the database). We want to get fair feedback and not people playing games with the new tool smile.gif . The time limit is again two weeks and you can re-report or praise them after that time.

BTW, you can praise or report members in the drop down menu under their name. You need to be a member to use this feature.

Cap'n,

I christened the new system with a member report tongue.gif
Captain Ewok
You just reported me tongue.gif. I saw that!
A.J.
sorry, a trolls gotta do what a trolls gotta do tongue.gif
A.J.
Captain,

Anything in the system that will detect when a single user reports more than a certain number of members in a short period of time? One could, technically, report every member on a thread one is unhappy with, thereby diluting the output of the new tool.
Captain Ewok
Well before I answer that I just made the system require you to be logged into before you can "report" people. So it is a member only feature. The reason is that Yahoo just started reporting about 20 people by following those links!

To your question there is not limit on reporting people. However you can only report them once. Only members that have large amounts of different members reporting them will even stick out on the reports page. In other words, don't worry about people randomly reporting you. This will only show really good stats over time as many different members may report certain members more than others (hopefully thus indicating where problems might lay). Additionally that is only a tool to help us. We get the final say and if it just looks like people ganged up on a person wrongfully then we can ignore the #'s so th speak smile.gif.
A.J.
Cool. Makes sense.

Good idea, btw.

Capn we are having that problem in VJ now, I think this tool will only accent the imbalance and cause a round of negated reports, if you will.

Person A has 20 reports. Person C doesn't like A so they get their friends to report them, thus cancelling each other out.
Jenn!
Great feature, thanks!
Captain Ewok
It is only a tool and has a human behind it. If we see abuse (people reporting tons of members) or otherwise then we will take that into account. I think this will give us added direction but certainly not a deciding factor. Like I said, just because a person is unpopular and may get a lot of reports does not mean they have done anything wrong and us as humans will see that. But it certainly narrows the field in finding problems ahead of time.

I am more concerned with the potential for abuse when a person gets all their friends to report the Post and I get 10 PM's reporting something. More odds for abuse in that system but it seems to work 'ok' for the most part.

Hands up all in favour of cap'n publishing monthly stats on this new feature laughing.gif

The VJ Wall of Shame.

P.S. I'm kidding

It may not be a bad idea for a member to know (privately) when he/she receives more than a certain number of reports.
Captain Ewok
Well I am not as concerned about the sheer number of reports in a short period of time, but more for members that get consistent amounts of reports over a longer period of time. In other words, everyone has a bad day and may piss off people. Just because that happens once in a blue moon we should not flag that as being so bad. What is bad on the flip side would be members that get lots of reports over a period of time.
A.J.
I don't think members who registered today should be allowed to report members today.
Captain Ewok
What if they were lurkers on the site for months before they registered? Impossible to tell. I screen by other things than member accounts to prevent abuse (confidential of course).

Dude. I can't imagine anyone would be so petty as to wrangle their buddies to report the same member. This looks like a good feature to me.

I agree. I think this can only be a positive thing. This way it can be used to gauge the general feeling towards members of VJ BY members of VJ.

good.gif
Alex+R
Wait. Now the report tool is gone and has ben replaced with a "rate me" thing? I preferred the report tool. It creeps me out thinking that everyone can at any time rate the ambiguous "plus" or "minus."

I guess I don't get it, either. I know when to "report" someone--when they're being rude--but I don't know when to rate someone. If I don't like what they said? If they're generally rude? If I just don't like them?
Nikita2Charles
I just noticed this plus and minus sign under the Profile ID

IS that something new or Just didn't noticed it before (Rate me + - )
Alex+R
Yeah, it was report member until recently. I preferred that.
Captain Ewok
Hmm. I was thinking this might give people the chance to give feedback on members for both good and bad behavior. Maybe I should rename it?

Like photographs and gifts to you? devil.gif
Captain Ewok
How about now. Does this layout make sense? Does it make more sense to have both good and bad ratings (and not just bad). These are private and anonymous ratings (not publically viewable by anyone including the member themselves).

Oh yeah. You can can now praise or report a member once every two weeks. This time restriction should prevent abuse (there are other safeguards in place as well).
Captain Ewok
Is it better now? Did you prefer only reporting members or also the Praising members as well?

What should we praise them for? Behaving in the opposite manner of someone who deserves being reported?

PS I like this praise/report thing better.
Captain Ewok
I put it in the drop down under the members name. Is this a better place? Also if you can think of a word other than "praise" let me know!
MichelleandCraig
I think it's better in the drop down for what it's worth...someone will search it out if they really want to praise someone or are really irritated, but won't be as likely to just click the button as if it was right out there. I like it. smile.gif M.
William33
I tested the new feature by praising myself and reporting you Captain... biggrin.gif

Seems to me that either feature should have a text box, to justify the rating. Otherwise, the results would not necessarily reflect a legitimate reason for the rating.

Sheriff Uling
I'm offering prizes for all VJ members that give me a praise report. (For a limit time only and subject to change without notice) Hehehehe
Yodrak
I agree with William.

And I have reported Uling - for trying to buy votes.

This is anonymous and private. It is a tool for me and not really a tool for the members. It is not supposed to be to build up egos and attack people but simply a way for me to get feedback to help find problems, etc, through member feedback. Since I do not read 99% of the threads outside this forum this will help me get a feel for the pulse of the site when it comes to certain things. smile.gif

In other words you can not see your or other members ratings. tongue.gif

I'm ok with not being able to see other members' ratings but I think it would
be useful to see your own. A person might want to change their ways
if lots of people are reporting them.

What do you think?

Interesting feature good.gif I like mawilson's idea of being able to see your own rating.

We filter praising yourself. Double rating someone also is filtered (within two week windows wink.gif).
eau_xplain
Thank you very much for this new feature Captain. There have been several members here whom I've seen as very helpful and deserving of praise.

I would just like to second that comment about having a text box come up. Not only will this make people think hard before clicking that button, but it will also allow us to correct mis-clicks (hitting report instead of praise and vis-versa).

So, where can you actually see someone's praise ratings?
I praised two today but couldn't see a difference
