I'm sick of hearing people say "It's not their fault". Really?? Are you serious? EVERYONE can control their own weight. In fact, I think tickets should be priced according to passenger weight. How do you like them apples? hey, you asked....

Is it nice in your small, unenlightened world?
Obviously, all of the doctors are lying when they diagnose medical problems that lead to weight gain. I'll be sure to tell the person who ballooned from 130 to 420 that they can control their own weight, and it's all their fault that they got that large.

i AM A BIG GUY, 5'6 280LBS, My wife is 5'5 130lbs :-) i have no problems on the planes and if the person next to me does, oh well, he can complain to the flight attendant. But i feel good and i am not lazy at all. I just have a certain condition that i can not help to lose the weight. ITS called THEROIDS. :-) I am on the go all day at work and travel a bit for business. So i dont consider myself lazy at all. It just the way my body was meant to be. Some people on here should think before saying BS

At least now we know who are the discriminating ones against big people. I wonder if you are also racist towards others as well?

Given fuel costs and nickel and diming airlines, the probable, "fair" solution will be for the morbidly obese to pay for their seat plus a fee (not ever another seat since they are not occupying it) to cover part of the revenue lost from leaving the side seat empty to ensure maximal comfort for all pax in said seating arrangement.

One butt, one seat, one fare. Plus fee.

I do also find comfort levels on most US airline coach to be inferior to other international airlines- and that given that seat width is actually less on the majority of international airline coach configurations, it spells that this phenom is an American in part, Western diet in tendency.

Steroids, is that what you mean or mispelled thyroid?

If it's roids, how can is this statement correct: "It just the way my body was meant to be."

Maybe medical exceptions can be accommodated when booking. Airlines, of course, would have to invest in creating these booking features. Proving this will be at times a very interesting endeavor.

I can't understand how a 400lb person and a 120 lb person are being charged the same. Esp since most airlines have lowered their luggage allowances cray5ol.gif

Perhaps there should be a weight limit of the person + luggage...the smaller you are, the more you can take devil.gif

I can understand it... one butt, one fare wink.gif

The airline, however, defines its seat width.

Guess what all, you are here in America, or you will be here soon and there is something that we all call EQUAL RIGHTS, so no matter how big or small or how tall or short we all are, we will all get treated the same. We will all equally pay the same for a fare wheather it'd be on a plane, train or bus. We here in america dont get singled out and say O you are heavier than him and must pay more. NOOO We are all the same, We are a free country and equal country!!

And if you dont like it the way we do it here, dont complain go back to where you came from!

Well, our luggage in the US does not get treated the same. It's discrimination. You pay more if your luggage weigh more than allowance. My luggage wants equal rights too

DakotaK1
They should have to buy 2 seats.
I once had this fat guy sitting next to me on the plane,he was almost sitting all the way on my seat.

Besides we have to pay overweight for cases, the fat people should do the same.
If they are not happy wih that then maybe its time to think of a diet wink.gif

IN EVERY COUNTRY, YOU HAVE TO PAY EXTRA FOR EXCEES WIGHT OF BAGGAGE, NOT ONLY IN THE US,

How can you compare human beings to your luggage?
A.J.
I care about my luggage more than I care about most of the people on this thread! They should let my luggage on the seats and put you losers down in the hold.

But it is the same principle. You pay for the weight of your luggage. Why can't we apply the same thing. I did not ask overweight people to pay more - but I like the thinking about total weight allowance instead of luggage allowance.

And if you are talking about human beings, why punish the non-overweight especially if the overweight clearly invade their space?

Maybe the airlines are going about this the wrong way.

What I mean is they're attemping a punitive approach. That might only serve to make passengers angry and resentful. Instead, perhaps airlines should try a more rewarding tactic.

My idea is if passengers can prove they've lost weight, they then get bonus miles placed on their Frequent Flyer program. The benefit to this is that there's an incentive for the passenger who's heavier-than-average to shed those excess pounds when traveling and it makes flying a better experience for others as well, since they don't have to sit near morbidly obese individuals.

All the proof that'd be necessary would be a before and after photograph. Some might say that's unreliable, given the proliferation of photo-editing tools today, such as Photoshop, but what good is making a picture of yourself look like you weigh 150 pounds when you really weigh twice that? Obviously, someone will notice pretty quickly. So while you might be able to get away with saying you lost a few more pounds than you did, suggesting that you lost a lot more wouldn't reasonably work.

Some people might say it's "unfair" that people would get rewarded for losing weight, but it's really a win-win situation. In addition, these people will probably still fly anyway, so instead of them craming themselves into one seat and making your flight experience miserable or purchasing two (and taking a seat away from someone else), why not try to make life a little more enjoyable for everyone when flying?

So... what do you all think? Maybe this idea isn't perfect and maybe it's not fool proof, but it's probably better than berating severely overweight individuals, telling them to buy two seats or they can't fly and making them feel like crap... or doing nothing and leaving the entire seating situation uncomfortable for everyone.
Nessa
If they should buy 2 seats there should also be an option for anorexic people to buy half seat, so they can accomodate 2 anorexics in one seat tongue.gif

I say ADA defines who we must accomidate. Bottom line should be if you encroach into someone elses space they paid for then you should have to do whatever it takes to not inconvenience them.

Obesity curable even if the last resort is surgery. People may say I am not going to starve myself just to loose weight so that is their choice.

When they start making seats that don't recline back so far into my face that I can't move my legs and am uncomfortable for hours on end, I'll think about losing weight to make you all happy.
