thank you

My husband plays video games all day even when I come home. That is so awesome he is helping out. My husband doesn't know how to cook and is afriad of using these new American gadgets like dishwasher and washer/dryer. So he fills up the dishwasher and takes out the trash. Next month he has placement exams to start college. We found out that his drivers licenses is good for 90 days. My parents lent us a car to use on the days he needs it. We have the blockbuster plan for movies so he is always getting new ones. After work we drive around town to get familiar with the place. I taught him how to drive to one of his close friends house which is an 1 hour 15 mins away so sometimes they hang out. He is going the Rotary group to help out and volunteer and a local soccer adult team. Like u I can't wait until August so he can go to school. His friends from home and sister are coming up in August. Helping have a second car helps when I am at work so he can look and window shop at new stores. Thanks for the volunteer web site. I teach summer school so I suggested he come read a Jamaican fair tale to my students or come listen to them read. At summer school we are always looking for volunteers to help. I will be done by July 3rd so then we will have time together. Oh we live across the street from the movie theater so I give him some money each week and he goes to the afternoon shows about 2 times a week. This has been a life saver living in the business district. Tell me any more good ideas you come by.

Yup, volunteering is the way forward, and it's really easy to do in the US. Do you have any national parks near you? The National Park Service is really really great to volunteer for.

Aside from that, I used to hang out at the local library, go out on my bike, work on photography projects, tonnes of stuff. Now that I'm in full time work and school I kinda miss those days of enforced nothing to do smile.gif

My husband is also at home waiting for his EAD. His day usually consists of...playing computer/video games, cooking/eating, tidying up the house, taking out the trash when needed, walking up to the corner store to buy smokes and calling me every couple hours to check in and give me exciting updates to how his day is going. I know he's anxious to work but he's being very patient. Lately he's been studying the book he was given at the Secretary of State for his drivers exam. We're hoping to get that taken care of within a couple weeks. Unfortunately we live in an area that requires a car to get around. Public transit here is almost non existant. Beside the corner party store, Baskin Robbins, video store and park there isn't anything within walking distance.

Thanks for asking this because I was wondering what I could do. I was thinking of joining the gym, cutting the grass, cleaning up around the house, etc. I want to join the police reserves as you don't have to be a U.S. citizen for that.

Excellent source! Thanks.

you may not need to be a U.S. citizen, but you may well need to be a permanent resident...that's the tricky thing, you are in limbo at the moment. I wanted to try to be a volunteer firefighter but I couldn't for that very reason.

How's his English? It might be a great help to him to take an ESL class - that's what I'm going to encourage my fiance to do once he gets here. His English is very good, but he could use a little help with grammar/spelling. Many community colleges have classes and they might not be too expensive. He could also meet people this way - maybe even others who are going through similar situations. Often the colleges have clubs he could join too. If you have a computer at home, he could take an online class too. Good luck to you!

My husband is working now, but he spent a lot of time watching TV (which seems to have helped his English), and using the computer to research stuff like potential jobs, schools, etc and keep in touch with the goings on at home. However the life saver was soccer! There are any number of soccer leagues or random games going on in our area which has been a God send. Through that he's been able to hook up with some pretty cool folks and get out of the house. He also took the time to do some sightseeing and learning his way on public trans.

So my husband is NOT the only one. He also cooks, cleans, washes the car, organizes, helps people out...takes me to work...goes to the gym. But, he's dying to work. I'm going to check out that website for him - it'll help him learn English quicker.
He does study English as well...watches a lot of TV, some internet, was studying for his DL test...volunteering a bit with me at my school (but now we're on summer vacation).

Tell him to keep at it. English can be hard for us English people to learn when we're young.

Thanks for the volunteering website. I wasn't sure wether we were allowed to do that or not. It would be great to do that. I spotted a few things that have to do with my professional training, and it would be a great way to keep busy and meet new people.

You can definitely volunteer. There are many good reasons to do so, that will help jump start your career here in the US. You get to meet people and network, get experience that you can put on a resume, and help improve the community you are living in. So if you are not going to be able to work for the 3-6 months while waiting for your EAD, volunteering is one way to make it easier to get into the job market when you can.
