Yeah, a few people over there certainly get their knickers in a twist pretty darn fast, lol! Then again, I seen to remember a certain Calagary fan who started a thread about user photographs that got some OT peeps all lathered up. Bet that wouldn't have gone as far if the thread had just stayed here in the Canadian forum where it was originally posted. I am sure hockey, Tim's, and poutine would have saved the day!

I actually was at the 1998 Stanley Cup game 4 between the Caps and the Red Wings. Series sucked, but it was very cool to at least see the Cup at the Verizon (then MCI, I think) Center. Not sure when that is going to happen again.

Since you can't agree and are obviously clueless in deciding on the centre of the universe, let me clarify it for yaaaah.... the centre of the universe would be ME, the one and only of course!!!!!

I'll be real honest, it's pretty prevalent in Colorado, and yeah, it really, really makes me angry (I swear I'm a mellow Canadian!!) probably half of our apartment complex is illegals, and they're obnoxious. The kids call out "Hey bi*** bring that a** over here!" every time I walk by the pool, etc. etc.... and there are big uproars about how American schools should be taught in all spanish.. stuff like that.
After the time, money, and sanity I've spent on this whole thing.. yeah it really makes me mad.

Hmmm, I live in Colorado too and yes we have more then 1/2 our complex as mexicans (not sure legal status at all), but never had a problem with any of them. In fact they are quite nice though most don't speak a word of english.

Now with the immigration thing, I think it's a huge slap in the face for me that they come over by just hoping a fence and then wanting legal status like they do. And I don't like how they want Spanish as a second language etc. America is a melting pot, love it or leave it. I don't like how many come and then try to change it they way they do.

Now with that, I signed up for the Texas Border Watch when it was active and the was fun looking and trying to find illegals on your computer which was hooked up to the monitoring webcams at a bunch of locations. And there was the report button that you could report a sighting that might be a illegal immigrant crossing. They need more of those.

Anyways, maybe they should ship them all off to Canada instead... Just kidding...

Small world. I was at the game too and at the time it was still the MCI centre. I don't see much hope that that wasn't the last time I will see the cup in DC. BTW I was also at the 4 overtime game at Cap Center in 87 against the Islanders. I still can't stand them.

What burns me most is, those of us here on this forum, from all over the world are trying to do things the right and responsible way....no thanks to Uncle Sam! God Bless America!

I live in CA and half of the people in any complex I have lived in are illegal. They load their 1bdrm with 14 people and all share the rent so they all just have to make pennies to live. Normally I would understand and appreciate the situation - considering I have not been a perfect little soldier myself when it comes to immigrating.

However these same people march, DEMANDING amnesty for their illegal actions while I spend thousands doing it the right way.

As long as they shut the ###### up and stop playing the victim in a country that isn't even theirs, I don't mind one single bit. But when they demand special treatment and they have no RIGHT to, then it bothers me.

I don't know how I Feel about the issue.

It's not that I am pro-illegal immigrant, but I do think some of them have a valuable investment in this country. A lot of people really can't afford to do it the proper way. We come from a country that is wealthy and we are pretty well off in terms of how we live, so I can't pass judgement on those who are going somewhere for a better life.

I also am a fan of michael bloomberg and a few months back he made a very interesting point. As a business man (a very smart one) he stated that if the united states were to deport even 1/3 of the illegal population, the country's economy would quickly down spirral. Because illegal immigrants are now such an integrated economical force in this country (something we do not have in canada) from a $$$ point of view, it could be possibly devastatintg to the nation.

Do I think it's right? No. Laws are laws and we are all trying to follow them. Am I affected by it personally though? Doesn't feel like it. In NJ there are a ton of illegals and they are pretty nice people that stay out of trouble because they don't want to attract any attention to law enforcement. It simply doesn't bother me either way.

Here's my issue with immigration in general...

The United States make's it so damn difficult to immigrate LEGALLY that many people feel they are left no other option but to "hop the border" and come in illegally. I am in no way excusing this behavior. I think if someone immigrates illegally (and if they're caught), they should be deported immediately; however, I would also like to see the U.S. make the rules a little more lenient regarding immigration.

I'm not suggesting that America takes "everyone and anyone" into it's borders, but when the only way to immigrate is through a Work Visa (and you need to "prove" you can do a job that no other American can fulfill, so you practically have to be a genius, a celebrity, or some sort of sports star) or a Family Visa (and this usually means fiance(e)s or spouses, and to a lesser degree, children; sometimes it can include parents, siblings or even extended family, but not as often), and not everyone qualifies for either of those, what're they left with?

Even if someone can get a Work or Family Visa, the costs can be prohibitive, especially in the case of the latter. Work Visas, more often than not, are mostly covered by the employer or some sort of entity. Family Visas, however, are paid for by the applicant in order to get their family members into the country, and with rising costs, it can prove difficult at times.

Honestly, I think the U.S. is shooting themselves in the foot by making LEGAL immigration this difficult. If they made it a little easier, then more people would probably come through legally (there would still be illegal immigrants, but the overall number might reduce) and then these legal immigrants could get better paying jobs, be taxed (maybe even in a higher income bracket), and not only put more money into the economy via circulation (i.e. buying stuff), but provide the government with more money due to taxation. It's a win-win situation all around!

But... that probably won't happen. The government is too shortsighted to see that, which is a real shame, because I think something like that would really help out this country.

I agree with you. By making the process complicated and costly, they are probably actually losing money (due to no taxation and circulation of illegal immigrants) which they could be putting into the american economy. Interesting post, deadpox.

I can't turn sideways without a mexican bumping into me speaking spanish.Send these illegal immigrants home along with their families. Let them "work hard" to make the countries they came from better.

They are working hard...in the united states. They are doing jobs that americans dont want to do. Yes its unfair and yes we are going through the painful process and they get to sneak in. But to do things the right way was my choice...anyone one of us could be living in the us right now but we choose not to. Until you go to a third world country and see how these people live...you would begin to understand. I dont agree with sneaking into a country but it is a matter of life and death for these people and sometimes they dont have another choice. I dont know...i just feel sorry for them...i guess i am just a sucker.

GA- I agree with you. I know some spanish people here that my husband works with (all legal though as they do work in a big name restaurant) who are the hardest workers we know. My husband works with some fellow americans that are nothing but lazy and slackers. (Since my husband has been in the restaurant business, almost two years, I have seen many-a-folk fired for their laziness and incompetence)

What i dont understand is that north american was built on immigrants...our families had to come from somewhere (unless you are native/aboriginal of course)...so why are people hating on "spanish speaking" immigrants. Someone gave our parents/grandparents/great grandparents etc a chance...so why wouldnt you do the same for someone else. i just hate this elitist mentality.

To clarify the "geesh" comment, it was towards people commenting on hating spanish speaking immigrants, not at you or thetreble.

I don't get it either because the attitude towards immigrants is totally different in Canada where it's a mosaic, not a melting pot. I want people to retain their heritage and culture and not "assimilate" like so many other people would want them to do.

And like you, I hate that mentality. I'm a born Canadian but I'll always look like an "immigrant". Maybe I should start speaking my parents' native language wherever I go or put on a thick accent just to pi$$ people off.

Also, I like going into different parts of town and getting "lost" in the sights, sounds, and atmospheres of different cultures. It's like travelling but in your own backyard. Okay, not so much where I am here in the U.S. but especially when I was living in Toronto or in larger U.S. cities.

Damn, my wife speaks Spanish fluently!! Maybe she isn't American!! Does that mean I'm here illegally? lol

It's also worth pointing out that a sizable number of 'illegals' are people who DID put in the time to do it legally but fell out of status for one reason or another. How many of you would want your spouse deported because your AOS was considered to be abandoned because an RFE was lost in the mail? You'd be an overstay all that time. And technically out of status....

All very good points and very true. I think any one who uses ignorance in this situation is just uneducated. As G & A said, both countries were built upon immigrants. Both of my parents were immigrants (dad born in glasgow, mum born in naples) and they moved because their families needed to find work at a time in europe where depressions were hitting hard. I'm proud of their heritage and think it is wonderful.

Misa, I also love getting a feel for other peoples cultures. It makes life so much more interesting. If I can't live in europe, I would at least like to get some cultural flava' up in here!

It drives me batty when someone is insistent on assimilation. North America was built on immigrants - some people need to have more tolerance. I thrive around different cultures - why keep to the same one all the time?

The more north you go, although I can't say I have proof of this (it's an assumption) , I would assume the less illegal immigrants you will probably find.

Some towns here in NJ are now trying to make local laws concerning illegal "aliens" (can i just express how much i HATE the world alien? They are not aliens they are PEOPLE) and housing. They are getting apartment building owners and other home owners that have 2 or 3 family homes to refuse to rent to those who are undocumented.

Other towns are doing the opposite! They are issuing these ID cards to illegal immigrants so that the police can identify them and others can identify them if need be. I think it's a good idea.
