I need some follow up treatment once I arrive in the US and have found a clinic that offers a sliding scale fee.

Does that count as becoming a public charge?

Of course not. They are just trying to figure out how much money you have so they can figure out how much to charge you.

I was always amazed when I would go to a dentist for example. They would have a question on what you did for a living. This was so they could determine which scale to use. I would just answer laborer or something like that.

No problem with this. A sliding scale for fees is not welfare by any means. Congrats in finding somewhere that offers it though.....I'm still searching!!

And here I thought they asked one's occupation so they could determine what kind of lifestyle a patient has...in terms of office work or working on oil rigs for example.
