BAHUTA
My fiance just arrived on a K1 visa and now we are preparing to apply for marriage license.

In her Asian country, they don't use first and last names like in USA. For example, her name is 'Khin Thandar' which is printed in her foreign passport and all the forms we submitted for K1.

However, she also uses an alias that resembles more the first and last name scheme that I stated in the G-325A biographical form while applying for the K1 visa, like "Jane Patterson".

If my name is "John Smith", we would want my fiance's name to be "Jane Samantha Smith".

How should I go about changing her name?

For marriage license, do I use "Khin Thandar" as it is her present legal name on her passport and birth certificate?

For AOS and SSN: I am not sure which name to use or when to change it to "Jane Samantha Smith".

Thanks for all your help.

I would suggest googling this, much information out there on name changes. It seems obvious to me changing her last name to yours would be a simple process, women do it everyday after they are married. Why she can't just refer to herself as "Jane" without a legal name change shouldn't be a big issue. Just to change her whole darn name to the point it no longer matches her official documents would probably take some legal advice.

I also did not have middle and last name. All that we had to do is wrote my second name as my middle name and my husband's last name as...my last name biggrin.gif. We did that for marriage license and other documentations since we got married, like the bank docs and AOS.

So when applying for the marriage license, before your actually married, if you want to take your husbands name you have to put that on the actual marriage license and not your birth name? OR do you just put your new married name on the marriage certificate?

On our marriage certificate my name is listed with the name I had *before* I married my husband. I'm not aware of being able to put your new married name on the certificate...as you aren't married at the time of applying. When I changed my name (SSN, work, insurance, etc.) all I had to do was produce the certified copy of the marriage certificate to show that I had indeed married and had the right to use my husband's surname. Really very simple for something like this.

For an all out name change...one's primary name...I would think this is a legal matter.
