SSA will not assign an SSN or issue a card in your status has expired or is within 14 days of expiring.

K-1 status is good for 90 days, so that only gives you 76 days to be assigned an SSN and issued a card. After that time you will need an EAD or I-551 card to establish authorization to work. Before that time your
I-94 showing K-1 status is the document that establishes authorization to work for SSN purposes.

The status/documents of all aliens must be verified before SSA will assign an SSN and/or issue a card and the 14 day limit applies even if you pass the 76th day while waiting for your status to be verified.

The SSA office will try to verify your status through the SAVE system while you are in the office. If they can't, they will send a form G-845 to immigration for manual verification. This could delay the assigning
of an SSN and/or issuing a card for weeks and some times months.

If the SSA office does send the G-845, I suggest that you go back to the SSA office no more that once week with your documents to (1) ask them to check SAVE again (2) ask if they sent a G-845 (3) if yes, did it come back (4) after 30 days ask if they have followed up on the G-845 by calling or sending another mark “second request.”

RM 00203.735 Requesting Online (Primary) Verification By SAVE

You can try calling the SSA Regional Office if you have waited at least 30 days and your local SSA office doesn't seem to be concerned about following up on the G-845.

Refer them to:

http://policy.ssa.gov/poms.nsf/lnx/0100203740
RM 00203.740 Requesting Additional (Manual) Verification By DHS

Step 6

DHS should respond to SSA within 15 federal work days after receiving the Form G-845. If DHS does not respond within 15 federal work days from the receipt of the G-845 from SSA, follow-up with the DHS, USCIS Immigration Status office. (Allow 15 days plus five additional federal work days of mail time for the G-845 to be received at and returned from DHS. Follow local practice to follow-up with DHS.

Some SSA offices have an arrangement with the DHS, USCIS office to telephone for the follow-up contact; other SSA offices send a copy of the original G-845 annotated “second request.”) If the DHS response is still not received within 15 federal work days after the follow-up contact (if the follow-up is by mail allow five additional federal work days of mail time for the G-845 to be received at and returned from DHS), make a second follow-up contact. If the DHS response is not received within 15 federal workdays (again, if the follow-up is by mail, allow five additional federal work days of mail time for the G-845 to be received at and returned from DHS), after two follow-ups, contact the Regional Office (RO). Also report to the RO any trend that shows a serious deviation by DHS from the above time frames. The RO will consult with central office.

It's a 'hurry up and wait' game blink.gif

just to give you an idea of the wait time- i applied for my SSN around the 2nd week of
february. i got everything i needed - bank accounts, drivers license, marriage license
car insurance sans ss number. as soon as i got my EAD though, i went to the office to apply
and they told me i wasn't in the SAVE system. reading the previous posts, people said
to wait for a week and then try to call the ss office. i did wait more than a week ,
actually 3 weeks and no card, no i wasn't in the save system either- according to the
employee who at the time i called was probably having a bad hair day. 4th week of
the wait, i received a note that they wanted= " a copy of the back to send to immigration'
why the ----didn't they tell me that or the appropriate question is WHY DIDN'T THEY TAKE
A COPY OF THE BACK IN THE FIRST PLACE ???????
have just put the phone down right now ( was talking to an 800 SS agent ), now they say
it's still under process. asked her twice, if i was in the SAVE system, took a while before
she answered yes and if i don't get anything after 2 weeks call them back. unsure.gif

why is this government bent on solving illegal immigration issues when they can't get
their act together with the legal immigration issues- just a thought whistling.gif

We're in the same boat as you the rest of you. Waited almost 3 weeks, went into the SSA office and James wasn't in the system. The woman said she HAD to send it off for verification so we are waiting. The was late Feb. I'll let you know if he ever gets a SSN!

Intrmuros- how did you get all those things sans SSN? I know there are ways around some of it, but the license is what we are really worried about... we went to the RMV and they did not care about our story one bit!

hi j&js,

i am presuming that RMV is the department of motor vehicle ? if i presumed right, there are specs
per local DMV. before they gave me the written and practical test, they asked for my I-94, drivers
license in the philippines, had to show them my visa , proof of local residency ( gave them the
lease agreement of the apartment with my name included and signed by the landlord ) and proof of
health insurance. james ( my sweetie wink.gif ) and i weren't married yet, so no marriage license and
it wasn't in the list of their requirements anyway. the license was valid till my I-94 expired
but they told me though that i could renew it if i show proof of AOS. so 2 weeks before expiration
i showed them all my NOAs and they renewed the license for another 180 days. so i have till june
of this year. again, i was told that if i get my ead and ssn they will give me the regular driver's
license which has i think is renewable every 2 years.
bank accounts, marriage license and car insurance - you don't need ssn for these things.

try to get a hold of a local manual, they do contain the requirements. i was just glad that the guys in
the local office here were so helpful, like they accepted my health insurance from home (thank God
it was still valid at the time that i applied )

i do hope this will help you . i don't know if i remember right but in the old forum there was one
who went to another office and got the license . can't really remember the whole story now, it's
been a long time.

oh and do call the SS office at least once a week. i called the DHS 800 number too last week. but
that's another story(headache). i do pray for a light at the end of the tunnel, i'll pray for you and
james' too.

Not even 2 weeks after i started this thread. I got my ssn today. Fair play to the guy in portsmouth who said he would manually check in a few days if i was in the save system.

On the card it states "Valid for work only with DHS authorization", I gather this means until i have an EAD form as well.

Im delighted as now i can open a bank account and apply for drivers ed and hopefully get my licence.

James's SSN just came in the mail today as well! Same message about work only with authorization. We are just excited that he can finally get a driver's license now!
