There are indeed flights direct from New Delhi to the NYC area.

Continental has one from DEL -> EWR (Newark Airport is less then 30 minutes away from JFK) and Continental does sell 1 way tickets.

i did fly from chicago to delhi continental airlines last yr, nonstop, 16 hrs devil.gif

my legs ached for days wacko.gif

from then, went to india trice only thru lufthansa..hyd-frnfkt-houston

lufthansa definetly should gave flight from frnfkt to jfk..try them, they would give 2-3 hrs of change over at frnfkt

This shows the common misconception between direct and nonstop.

There are many DIRECT (but not nonstop) DEL->JFK and BOM->JFK flights, especially by Air-India, which make an intermediate stop (for refueling, etc) in Europe; US-bound travelers with valid visa papers do not need a visitor or transit visa to be on such flights (and these do have the advantage over the nonstops of being able to stretch your legs, wash your face, etc).

my husbd did travel by the air india he had probs with the terminal change at london
so i wanted to check with a less complex flight
i do understand about the leg ache here for these non stop ones

Isn't it hard to know the terminal beforehand? Even our E-ticket did not mention what terminals the flights were taking off from and landing in (we were both new in booking flights so were just concerned with not many plane changes, and did not pay attention to terminals).

Anyway, there are plenty of cheaper flights available. We got his ticket by doing an Internet chat with Makemytrip.com, maybe they could provide details of terminals also, and they had the cheapest tickets I could find.

actually I am curious about that too..I heard from a friend of mine that they did let his aunt board the plain in bombay since she did not have visa for london (she had a green card) not sure how true that is..b/c when you fly airindia, they just take you out from the plane in london and make you sit in one room. there is no way, to go out I think..not sure why would you need visa..?? I guess you can check with air-india or someone who has flown air india direct flight recently. in any case also update us smile.gif I also want my wife to come on AI since direct flight from ahmedabad - chicago. no other worries about luggage etc smile.gif smile.gif

My fiance came via Hamburg and I had the same question before, so researched online (with help from a VJ thread which I can't find at the moment). The fact is that, if we have a valid US visa, no transit visa is necessary if one does not leave the airport. Please see the below website quote:

http://www.immihelp.com/visas/nonustransit.html

Non-USA Transit Visa
If your final destination is United States or Canada, you may come to US/Canada either through Atlantic or Pacific route. For Atlantic route, you may have a stop over in London, Paris, Frankfurt, Amsterdam etc. For Pacific route, you may have a stop over in Singapore, Hong Kong etc.

During your intermediate international stop over, if you have sufficient time and you want to tour the city and/or country, you may apply for transit visa at the appropriate counter at the airport. Transit visa is a temporary short period visa during your journey. Some countries require that you have a stop over ofminimum of 24 hours to grant you transit visa. But Singapore provides transit visa for a stop over of as less as 4 hours. They even have airport transportation available at no charge for passenger tour.

Recently, several countries have started to require transit visa for persons transiting their countries even if they do not want to go out of airport. However, most people who are going to or coming from with valid visa do not require transit visa. There has been lot of confusion in this regard among people and many times even airline staff does not have correct information.

UK(United Kingdom or Britain or England)
Direct Airside Transit Visa
Airlines such as United Airlines, Air India, British Airways, Virgin Atlantic, Emirates (not a complete list), you may have stopover in London Heathrow.

If you are one of the passport holders listed below and will transit the UK airside (i.e. Mumbai-London Heathrow London Heathrow-New York, and not Mumbai-London Heathrow and then London Gatwick-New York destination, staying in the UK less than 24 hours), you require a Direct Airside Transit Visa to transit the United Kingdom. This is the case even if you only intend to remain airside and will not pass through UK Immigration.

AFGHANISTAN, ALBANIA, ALGERIA, ANGOLA, BANGLADESH, BELARUS, BURMA (MYANMAR), BURUNDI, CAMEROON, PEOPLES REPUBLIC OF CHINA, COLOMBIA, DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF CONGO (ZAIRE), ECUADOR, ERITREA, ETHIOPIA, GAMBIA, GHANA, INDIA, IRAN, IRAQ, IVORY COAST, KENYA, LEBANON, LIBERIA, MACEDONIA, MOLDOVA, NEPAL, NIGERIA, PAKISTAN, PALESTINIAN AUTHORITY, RWANDA, SENEGAL, SERBIA AND MONTENEGRO, SIERRA LEONE, SOMALIA, SRI LANKA, SUDAN, TANZANIA, TURKEY, TRNC, UGANDA, VIETNAM, YUGOSLAVIA, ZAIRE (FORMERLY DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF CONGO), ZIMBABWE.

Please note however that if you are transiting en route to the Republic of Ireland, and you are a national of one of the countries above, you will require a visit visa and the exemptions below do not apply.

Exemptions: You are exempt from this requirement if:

1. You hold a valid US or Canadian visa and your ticketing includes a visit to the US or Canada.
2. You are in possession of an onward ticket for travel by air via the UK when leaving the US or Canada within 6 months of your last date of entry to the US or Canada with a valid US/Canadian visa.

(etc etc...
