My wife would like to get the Colombian passport with the new last name on it. Are we able to get that with the marriage certificate in Colombia? If so will we be able to file the K3 and I129 papers with the new name as well? Anyone done this in Colombia?

Thank you for any help with this.

Most of us Colombian women keep our maiden names in Colombia. In fact, changing your name to your husband's is pretty much unheard of. I think that if she wants to have her new name on her Colombian passport, she will have to change her cédula as well. She should call their office to find out what they tell her. But as far as I know, most Colombian women keep their maiden name in Colombia and use their husband's name here in the States.

I appreciate the response, to be honest I think it will be alot less complicated for her to just keep her name through the process and while here in the states get the SS card and DL with my name. She would like to change the name completley here and in Colombia. I will have her call the office of the Cedulla to start with to see what they say about this. By the way its nice to see other people that got married in Medellin as well, actually Bello for me, but I live and always stay in laureles.

By the way I noticed in your timeline that you didnt do the i129f along with the k3. Any particular reason for that? Thanks.

Well, I never got the NOA1 for the I-130 in the mail and I thought it was needed to file the I-129F. It turned out to be a better choice though because now we don't have to deal with AOS nor EAD. The K-3 visa was made available so couples can be together faster than going through CR-1 which used to take forever and a day. But now a CR-1 visa is taking on average 7 months, while the K-3 takes about 5-6 months. I think that extra month or two is worth the wait, that way my husband can get his green card and SS card in the mail a few weeks after he gets here.

We had to have a quick marriage because of family issues that were going on at the time, so we ended up getting married at Notaría 17 in El Poblado. We now live in barrio Boston but I was pretty much raised in Guayabal, close to Campos de Paz. See... now you got me all sad thinking about Medellín, I miss that place. cray5ol.gif

my wife wanted to take on my last name but was told that to get a colombian passport she would have to use the same name that's on her cedula. to change her name on her cedula takes a long time, years in some cases, especially now that everyone in the country has to update there id's to the newer version. if your wife wants to get a new cedula, they´ll give her a contraseña first, a temporary card, she might be able to get her passport with that but she should call the passport office and find out. anyway, we decided it wasn't worth the hassel so in colombia my wife will have her documents in her maiden name and when she enters the us, she will have her documents with my name, no big deal
