Sorry, I swear I'm almost done. Our interview is next month and my fiance's passport expires in july. I guess I"m not sure what i'm asking but is that going to be a problem? I mean it'll still be good for the interview and of course he won't be able to come down until it's renewed. This won't really matter will it??

One requirement is you have to have: "A passport valid for travel to the United States and with a validity date at least six months beyond the applicant's intended period of stay in the United States."
It needs to be renewed before the interview.
QUOTE
Applying for a VisaThe consular section at the embassy or consulate where you, the fiancé(e) of an American citizen, will apply for a visa, will tell you about any additional specific requirements that you need to fulfill to complete your visa application, such as where you need to go for the required medical examination. The following is required:
- A passport valid for travel to the United States and with a validity date at least six months beyond the applicant's intended period of stay in the United States.
- Birth certificate
- Divorce or death certificate of any previous spouse for both the applicant and the petitioner
- Police certificate from all places lived since age 16
- Medical examination (vaccinations are optional, see below)
- Evidence of financial support (Form I-134, Affidavit of Support may be requested.)
- Two Nonimmigrant Visa Applications, Form DS-156 (A Form DS-156, prepared in duplicate.)
- One Nonimmigrant Fiancé(e) Visa Application, Form DS-156K
- Two nonimmigrant visa photos (each two inches 50 X 50 mm square, showing full face, against a light background)
- Evidence of a fiancé relationship
- Payment of fees, as explained below.
The consular officer may ask for additional information according to the circumstances of the case. Documents in foreign languages should be translated.
Take clear, legible photocopies of civil documents, such as birth and marriage certificates, to the interview. Original documents can then be returned to you.

Change that passport, it is true , it must be at least 6 months valid in the moment they issue the visa.

No worries (with the questions). He DOES need to renew his passport - like the other more wiser posters said before me... if the passport does not have more than "6 months to go", the visa cannot be issued.- So send the fiance running to the passport office - i hear they are uber busy.
Best of luck, L.

Get him down to a passport office ASAP along with a copy of the checklist from the consulate stating the required validity period along with the interview letter. He should be able to have it expedited (but will pay extra).

I just realized that my passport is going to expire in 5 months. I will have to get new one too and will be paying the extra $70 fee to get in expadited as Urgent. Just another pain in the arse thing to get done before going to Montreal.

Ha well good thing I had the same problem....so i guess he can get it within 2 to 9 business days, but it's a little more expensive. I think we'll be alright.

Ditto on the 6 month thing. Also, consider that you don't want to arrive in the U.S. and then find that you are without a valid passport. In order to apply for a new one, you have to send the old one in. That means you will be out of status, possibly adjusting status, in a foreign country (it will still be considered 'foreign' at this point, right?) with no passport.
You also need a valid passport when you attend the AOS interview.
Just get him hopping. There is a hella wait happening and though he should be okay with time, if I were you and your fiance were David - I wouldn't reassure him too much, lol, or it would never get done in time.

i had to get a passport from the FORMER country of yugoslavia cause that's where i was born (although have not lived there since 1st grade), and Serbia said tough luck, but i kept pressing and pressing, and it cost several hundred dollars plus couple hundred to get it expedited. they wouldnt give me a serbian one, but a yugoslavian one. even though that country doesnt exist anymore. it's a mess. i had to call my aunt in europe to drive several hours last minute to the small city i was born in and get a birth certificate for me, too, lol. and the passport was in my maiden name, which pissed off the consulate.
my point? it could always be worse, hah

If you want to make your trip to the passport office less painful, fill out your application online and print it out. If you walk in with a online-prepared package and all of your supporting documentation/guaranteed photos, they will
rush you to the head of the line and you won't have to brave the long line ups, which can be a problem in some areas still. When I went at the end of January, there was still a six hour wait, but I was rushed through two different stop points, and I was in and out of there in ten minutes, head still spinning.
Doing it online is less of a pain, too, because it sorts through the not applicable questions for you.

Yes, I did the online e-pass. I just need to get my photos done and find a guaranter, which isn't all that easy at times. I just hate the Canadian passport process, I wish it was like the US's. Theirs is so simple and the passport is good for 10 years. What a pain it is going to be to re-apply in another 5 years and especially waiting for it and needing it to cross the border to commute to work and I won't have it.
This may be the reason that I may consider US citizenship - at least I'll have a US passport to cross with while waiting on the Canadian one and vice versa.

If I knew where your fiance would be applying for his passport I could give you a better idea of how long the wait is. If the interview is in July he doesn't need to pay mega bucks to get it before then. He can pay a $10 pick up fee and go back and pick it up exactly 2 weeks from the day he applied. Feel free to message me any questions that you have.
Since other 'government' people on here have outed themselves I guess I'll out myself too......

I knew it! I had suspected there were other gov't people incognito on here. Are you planning on keeping your job and commuting? If you are I'd like to keep in touch with you especially with figuring the tax, pension, etc out. Even better that your a fed. employee. Are you under the Treasury board?
I'm hoping to go into Winnipeg on Monday and p/u my medical results and head to the PP offce. I will still need to expadite as I don't plan on going back into Winnipeg until it's time to fly out to Montreal for my interview.

For all of you who have to renew their passports after sending in Packet 3: since you probably put your old passport number on the DS-156 forms you sent in with Packet 3, DO BRING IN A NEW SET OF DS-156 FORMS (W/ BARCODE) WITH THE NEW PASSPORT NUMBER TO THE INTERVIEW!
Otherwise they will only issue your visa only after you mail in the new forms after the interview.
This almost happened to us - we brought a renewed passport to the interview; luckily we had an extra set of forms printed out with the new info just in case (following VJ advice). Had we not taken this extra step, they'd have delayed our visa until the new forms get to them in the mail.

I'm a CR-1 and we don't use a DS-156. I think the original poster was a K1 but I think they probably have had their interview by now.
