Full Version: J-1 Visa - what's the process to change jobs/location?

A friend of my wife is here in the USA on a J-1 (Work and Travel) Visa. She's only just arrived a few days ago and is already working at the job that she had pre-arranged.

I've found a job for her here in our city and also a place that she can live. What is the exact process that she has to follow in order to change the place that she's living and accept employment at the new job, which would be within the same state (if it makes any difference) but a different city (about a 6 hour drive from where she is at now)?

Thanks in advance for any answers!

We are a family base immigration site, not a work-based visa site. I suggest looking elsewhere.

Do you have any suggestions where? So far I've turned up nothing useful. I'm not so off topic as you may think. This search for an answer is more for the benefit of my wife Lena who is stuck sitting at home all day while waiting for her AOS and employment authorization to come in - it would help her out a lot if her friend who is here temporarily from Russia were able to spend some of her time with her. sad.gif

By the 'we' in 'We are a family base immigration site', Lena and I are part of that 'we' yaknow.

Looks like work is restricted to whatever employer was originally tied to the visa, but it's hard to tell.

What are the limitations of J-1 visa?

On J-1 visa, you must:

• Restrict yourself to studying, working or other wise participating in the special exchange program for which your visa has been approved

What is the process to extend or change my status, or change programs?

The Program Designation Branch in the Bureau of Education, Cultural Exchanges and Academic Programs (ECA) handles J1 visa extension, category changes, and program transfers. You will need to contact them directly if you have further questions about one of these issues. They can be reached at 202-401-9810

Maybe you should get in touch with the program that handles the visa, even though it doesn't sound like you are talking about a change of programs

I don't have any suggestions, whihc is why I suggested to look elsewhere. VJ (we) are family immigration, what you are asking for is not something which is discussed here. Better to look around on non-family immigration sites than get wrong info or no info, no?
