For the first year she will not work, so she can get used to living in America. After that it will be up to her. But it would be nice for her to work a little, (part-time), so she could have something to do with her time. But in the end it will be up to her.

Work is probably the best way to get used to America.
Dawny&Tommy
I voted for Tommy.

Yes, I will be working eventually when I get there smile.gif
Jamie76
I voted that it is up to her. She is going to have to take some time to get used to it here, but she has mentioned she would like to work. I think it would be nice because she is working full time in Thailand now and does well for herself.
Arazia
No, at least not right away.
My husband will be completing his schooling here for a few years before he works, although he might get a summer job if he doesn't take any summer classes.
KarenCee
My husband is currently working for the Georgia DNR. Not in his field, but hey...it's work. smile.gif
garyandmarylou
Gary was fortunate to find a job within a few weeks of receiving his EAD. Aug 7th he will be working there a year.
Aymerlu
My husband starting working as soon as he got his EAD. He's a very social person and this was a good way for him to get out and meet people too.

You took the words right out of my mouth. good.gif

I voted for my husband - he can't wait to work. He gets bored at home and is used to keeping busy (work).
It'll help him learn English faster and as you all said - get used to living here.
Plus, it helps us out.
doodlebug
You bet your sweet bippy he's gonna work!! laughing.gif laughing.gif laughing.gif

It will take him a good three months or so though before he is able to apply for a serious job....which is probably how long it will take for him to get his EAD I would imagine. He will take some ESL courses to improve his writing and it will take him some time to navigate around the city, learn how our money system works, ie. how to make change, how to know which stores you can bargain with and which stores you just can't do that in, etc.

Hehehe, not working for the first year is probably the best way for her to get used to staring at the walls of her house and crying every day. Fun! Way more fun than working, huh?
StarProg
She definitely plans to work when she gets here. But she also plans to have a baby, so we'll just have to wait and see how it all works out.
moody
Of course he's gonna work. Because I'm a lazy arse, I just sent in the papers for his EAD today. He'll start (God willing) once that's approved. I figure we can use these few months (before EAD is issued) to work on his spelling, getting a driver's license, etc. before he works.

well, I have been here for over 2 years and I haven't worked outside of the home yet unsure.gif not because my hubby won't allow it or whatever tongue.gif.....

I need a car to get a job and I need a job to get a car tongue.gif

part of me is terrified to get a job too.... I had a hard time back in the little town I was from never mind trying to find a job here in the LA area wacko.gif plus I have no idea what I want to do....

Jomo's girl
The point is moot cause he's been here a year now and has been working. However, had I answered this before I would have said HELL YES he's going to get a job.
Nessa
I can't vote since I'm the foreign spouse. Anyway, thank God after being here for 7 months and having the EAD for 1 month I got a job. I don't think many spouses can come here and continue their career at the same level as it used to be on their home country. I was in a manager/supervisory level and now I am starting all over again from the bottom, but still, I got a good job and I can' t complain. I wasn't born to be a housewife, plus I won't sit on my butt and expect to get anything close to what I had in Brazil, I have to start somehow and I didn't wanna wait. So overall I'm very happy with my decision and good luck to all spouses that decide to work here good.gif .
tom&tata
It was agreed waaay before I moved that I would be working.

For him, it is really up to me. For me, having my DL and working give me the "old/normal routine" back. Helped a lot with the adjustment.

My husband will work after a couple months of getting used to being here.

Yeah that. Plus, my husband needs time to get reacquainted with his daughter and visa versa, not to mention we have to buy him a car, he has to get his driver's license, wait for his green card and SS card to come in, etc, etc. I don't want there to be any pressure to immediately get to work in the first two months. After that, he will start looking for temporary work. We are moving about 600 miles away this coming winter and so he won't be looking for anything permanent around Indy, just something to get some extra money and a work history started here in the US. Then, after the hopefully last large move we have to undertake for awhile, we will both be looking for permanent full-time but will take whatever in the meantime.
Parivar CSK
Suj wanted to start working as soon as possible, which was still 5 months after arriving. His EAD took a couple months to get approved, etc.

He really needed to work since I didn't have the best pay and we wouldn't have been able to get out own place until he worked. Now he just works and I don't! innocent.gif biggrin.gif I know we are blessed to be able to do that, and I love it!
Sid and Nancy
I'm a career-oriented person, so it's a big yes for me.
TracyLuis
I can't wait for Luis to get a job...Tracy needs a new pair of shoes...and diamond earrings tongue.gif
Misty1979
I voted for myself, even though I am the foreign spouse.
Yes I will be working as soon as I get there. Not sure doing what yet, but I'll be busy looking cool.gif
craigandkym
I'm voting for my future hubby..hell yeah he'll work as soon as the powers that be let him work! He's bummed he can't come over on simply a work visa. He's got a great career, his university degree and is well on his way to following his passions so for him to give it up for awhile, simply cause he's waiting for his EAD is going to be frustrating, but I really hope he stays happy till he can be out at work again! smile.gif

Nyah nyah...I've been to SoCal, what's the attraction? I get it if someone was born and grew up there, but why do people MOVE there?

What one person detests another one loves, I guess. We all like different things, life would be boring otherwise and VERY VERY crowded.

I dunno...................the mountains, the ocean, the desert, the weather.
Let's see:
  • Mountains--CA does top TX on that score, unquestionably
  • desert--fairly large parts of TX are certainly desert, so doesn't top there
  • ocean--TX has a coast; I guess CA can claim "topping" due to longer coast
  • weather: both cases, generally warm--but for those who wish to see snow, possible in CA unlikely in TX
TX does better on:
  • taxes -- both have rather high sales taxes, but TX at least compensates with a state-income-tax of ZERO
  • general cost-of-living (Dallas similar generally to Atlanta, Houston slightly higher; SoCA on the other hand generally higher than Gaithersburg)
On my "travelability" issue, both are rather similar (there are straight-through flights to YYC from DFW and IAH in TX, and from LAX and SFO in CA)
Given a choice with ONLY these options, I would take TX over CA.

I would not move to Texas for love or money.

Different strokes and all that.

you better beleive it. Between us there are 5 children.

HELL YEAH the man is going to work! He just got his EAD card and is ecstatic. I swear, it was like Christmas Day for him. He is a carpenter and, since we knew he wouldn't be able to work at first, we decided to buy a fixer-upper house. Seemed like a great idea at the time, but we didn't take into account the complete lack of contact with any other humans besides me sad.gif

Plus, we have been surviving on my salary, but, when we lived separately and were both working, we had gotten used to having money for a lot more extras. He can't wait to buy fancy shmancy tools (yes honey, I know it is "As seen on TV", but do we really need a ... blah blah blah) smile.gif Whatever, when he works, he can indulge his love of gadgets.

And I will get to become the massage junkie my body knows it is meant to be!!!
msu17
Abso-freaking-lutely! He's worked since he was old enough and is and is ticked at NOT being able to work. Plus where else will he meet people? He's mad that he's found all these jobs online he wants and can't apply yet wink.gif

We don't get hurricanes, tornadoes are rare and small, snow is kept at a respectable distance up in the mountains, lots of sun....

Otoh, the legislature is to the Left of Chairman Mao, traffic is obscene, gangs have infested many areas...

But, it is the place I was born and raised, and my family, most of my friends, and my church are all here....moving out is just not a consideration.

I've been here just over a year and haven't worked. Dave works 6pm-4am, so if I got a 9-5 I'd never see him. We don't need the money to survive. Saying that, you can never have enough!

I do start college next month to become an EMT. I'll be part of a voluntary quick response team at Dave's firehall initially, but might go part time at the local EMS station once I'm more confident.
