Hello,

I was reading in the guides and from other posts that the DS-156 has to be filled out online for the bar code. But.... when my fiance received his packet, it had the DS-156 form in there, so he filled it out by handwritting it. I went to the US embassy in Ankara website and it said it could be filled out online for easier application, but it didn't state that it Had to be filled out online.
I am a little confused, can someone clear this up for me.

Thank you very much in advance.

It is best to fill out the online version as, when printed, prints a bar-code on the form. Whether or not the embassy suggests it, do this version just to move things along smoother.

I believe either version is acceptable (in most embassies) in case you/he has already submitted it - Check the Ankara Embassy section here on VJ to be certain. good.gif

I don't think any embassy accepts handwritten DS-156 forms anymore for over 2 years now. I think it will be better to fill it out online and get the barcode as it makes it easy for them to retrieve all the details at the embassy. If their website says fill it out online, then I suggest you do that. Goodluck with your upcoming interview! kicking.gif kicking.gif

i just got my packet 3 yesterday and they enclosed all the necessary forms. i decided to use the pdf's from vj, filled them outon my computer and then printed them out, so no handwriting! but the ds 156 is not the electronic version.
is it really necessary to fill out the e-form? will i get in trouble if i dont use that one?
oh and do i have to sign this one or not?

If it's not the electronic document than it does NOT have to be typed. However, it does make it neater.

so it doesnt really matter if its the electronic one or the one you can print out as long as its legible?
